Mangosteen

Got some Trader Joe's freeze dried Mangosteen.

Quite interesting. Sweet and tart, with a nice nutty flavor from the edible pit. I would like to try a fresh fruit sometime.

It's dry and airy. It dissolves in your mouth. Pretty good.

Seriously, they don't taste as well as fresh mangosteens but I don't know where you can get any around the States.

I've had the fresh and its really good, flavor is somewhat similar to lychee.

Seriously, they don't taste as well as fresh mangosteens but I don't know where you can get any around the States.

Check your local Asian markets. A Vietnamese market here in SLC usually has them but be prepared to pay around $14 for a dozen

I can get fresh mangosteens in Chinatown in NYC.

They go for around 7-8 dollars a pound.

They have a thick, waxy (and bitter!) outer pith, similar to a pomegranate. You need a knife to get through it.

the flesh of the fruit is sectioned like a tangerine, but white.

Subtly sweet, not too tart. The taste alone isn't worth the 7-8 dollars, but the supposed nutritional benefits are supposed to be amazing.

They have very little nutritional value according to the Wiki. They're white; they contain no phytochemicals.

Read the Wiki article. I would be careful about Mangosteen juice. It seems some may try and put some of the purple colored outer shell into the juice, which contains xanthones. Some of which may not be bad, but some are.

I had some in Dalian, China last summer. Really good, but I tried the canned versions here in the USA, and they tasted nothing like the fresh ones.

more details? why would the shell be bad?

The fruit part has almost zero nutritional value. The shell has a lot, but it is inedible so you juice the whole thing and get some of the compounds out of the shell. Some of them are good for you, others are questionable.
