His play in the BCS National Championship was a hoax...

But this is gonna cost him millions probably. Everyone high on him due to "his leadership" skills but with this...

ND Statement:

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

University Spokesman | Assistant Vice President

Notre Dame is staking a big claim by saying Manti was duped and was not in on it all all.

So ND is saying Manti Te'o was the victim of the hoax? What, did his actual girl friend (you have to assume there was some physical relationship) used a fake name, then faked her own death? To what end?

So that would mean that the actual person in the photos lied to deadspin about her involvement in the hoax, because in order for Te'o to be duped she would have had to actually begin a relationship with him.

I dunno it seems to have gone on for long enough that he would have figured out it was a scam BEFORE she "died of cancer" not afterwards. He is either lying or an idiot.

I'll go with a lying idiot

He's claiming to have met this fictional person several times. So there's that. He's lying. Period.

Wow, just wow. Looks like some in depth reporting was done to uncover this.

I think it's crazy that blogs have become in depth journalists more than the newspapers these days.

Exactly, there's something fishy with that claim. Was she trying to extort money from him?

The flip side is, what was the benefit to Te'o claiming she died.

None of this shit makes sense, occam's razor fails here.

Doug Gottlieb briefly talked about how Notre Dame tried to help him when they released their statement when he "stole credit cards and fraudulently charged them".

You'd think the people reporting her death would have done -some- fact checking, it appears they did NONE. I wasn't even aware of this story before hand since I don't follow college football but it looks like it was widely reported meaning LOTS of reporters did NO fact checking.

Honestly I think that's a bigger story.

She could just look like someone who did meet with Te'o pretending to be her.

Had never heard of this guy before but a really interesting article.

Naive dummies thinking you can pull this off in the age of the Innerwebs.

My thoughts exactly. These weren't exactly mom-and-pop small town rags, either.

@Mobute Not sure why people are mad at Te'o. Tim Tebow spent every year of his career in a relationship with a made-up person who died tragically.

Stephen Douglas @CRM_Stephen
Manti Te'o wasn't missing tackles in the National Championship, he was hugging his girlfriend.

He went pretty far with it. Pretty amazing that this whole time, no one in the mainstream media picked up on all the holes in his story or bothered to look up his girlfriend. It took the actual, real person in that picture to speak up.

Her death got him to the Heisman ceremony. Te'o has had a fairly common season as far as linebackers go:

A: 113 tackles (55 solo), 5.5 TFL, 1.5 sacks, 7 INTs, 1 FR,
B: 130 tackles (55 solo), 15 TFL, 4 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FF
C: 191 tackles (102 solo), 12 TFL, 3 INTs, 1 TD

A is Te'o
B is Kevin Minter (LSU player, 2nd team All-American)
C is Luke Kuechly, 2011 Butkus Award winner (Boston College)

Playing for ND and having a sob story puts your name out there, meaning people watch you.

Well, it looks like the smart move for Te'o would have been to come out early
