Immaterial. The amount of wear is so small that there is no tangible effect on the life of the bearing unless you're using an absurdly heavy pressure plate.

Regarding gear ratios: On my 944, first and reverse are identical at 3.500:1.

I haven't lost a TOB before a clutch yet, but my uncle's Dakota did, and a friend's GMC Sonoma literally tore one up (we pulled it out in pieces)..who knows why that happened, though.

I leave mine in neutral rather than keep the pedal down..much more comfortable (ACT heavy duty pressure plate). I did drive my cousin's Sunfire, though..there's almost no resistance when the pedal is to the floor.

heh, while we're at it on the throw-out bearing. I have never had to replace a clutch, and I drive hard as a mo-fo. 130K plus on cars and still haven't had to replace a clutch.

Now I did have a problem with a clutch/tranny one-time and my mechanic told me it was because I caught 2nd gear too hard...basically dumping it in second. Sure is fun though.

I haven't (completely) worn out a clutch either..replaced clutch/flywheel in one of my cars (the old clutch was tired..didn't slip yet, but didn't grab hard on a fast shift)..replaced the clutch on another car because we swapped transmissions. Might as well, while it was apart..mid-engine RWD cars don't have the most fun clutches to replace.

Try a 944 Turbo with the one-piece crossover pipe. I love my 914, can get the engine and tranny out of it easily.

I was told/shown by mechanic that to test a clutch try starting out in 4/5 gear. If you can the clutch isn't worn out. If it slips way to much and you can't get the car to move, then the clutch is worn out.

any thoughts?

I've had to use the gas pedal when backing up my Dakota pickup truck out on construction sites and such (backing up to houses/into driveways with steep inclines). Just like going forward, letting the clutch out and pressing the gas in makes the truck go faster. I wasn't aware there were vehicles that didn't do that.

That's ass-backwards.

Engaged means that the clutch is coupling the transmission input shaft with the flywheel. Disengaged means that the clutch is not making contact with the flywheel and the engine can spin free of the drivetrain.

If I'm in a level parking lot and backing out of a space, I never let the clutch out all the way, if I do then I'm going too fast. But I always have to apply a little gas.

What would you do if you had to reverse up a hill - like you are parallel parked on the side of the road. You'd obviously have to use gas in any vehicle. So that blows the argument that gas doesn't affect reverse.

not if you're gentil with the clutch control. You can get just about any vehicle moving in 1st without applying power. I've done it no problem with a 850cc car, your fat-ass american cars should have no problem pulling off with no throttle.

Edit: If I actually want to move at a decent pace, then yeah, I use throttle to get the thing going backwards.

Edit again:
Ok, @ 2 min (when it says3:30:41) into the clip you can hear him revving the car so it doesnt turn off (the car inst tuned yet, so it turns off... after the tune he can back up normally) Neways thats how my car sound.. you can hit the gas and the engine gets loud, but the speed doesnt change unless u let go of the clutch more
What? Sounds to me like the guy's allowing his clutch to slip. Of course the car will go fastere if you hit the accelerator, whether in reverse or not. Kid's full of crap.

I never knew about all this before so I tried it. my car when in reverse will move by itself by letting the clutch out. If I give it a little gas it will reverse a little quicker.

I let the clutch half way out (I usually don't reverse fast enough to let it all the way) and gas slightly. Yes, gassing in reverse will make your car go faster backwards.

Ive gone FAST in reverse, turned the wheel, and dropped it into first and hit the gas.... beat the cars backing up from the train because of that too
