no-1990 VW Golf

Honestly, I prefer "no", since there are a few situations in which you WANT to be able to crank it without pushing the clutch in. But I suppose enough idiots would send their cars through garage doors that it's a worthy addition...

Yes - Honda Prelude. Prefer it this way.

What emergency situations you guys speak of where you would rather the clutch not be depressed before starting?

Well, there was the one time I was stuck on a gravel road high in the Andes with a land-rover that died. It was HEAVY, needless to say, and I needed to turn it around to coast back down the mountain to get help. I ended up having to use the starter motor to "pull" the car forward enough to turn it around.

Similarly, if your engine dies somewhere inconvenient and you HAVE to move the car a few feet, you can do so if your clutch doesn't have a switch.

But since most people will NEVER encounter such a situation, and are much more likely to do the stupid thing and hit something when they don't press the clutch...a switch is a good idea in most cases.

Sucks that we have to appeal to the lowest common denominator, though.

Then why not put it in gear and try starting it?
It was my understanding that this was a "neutral safety" issue.

Yes - Dodge

Also, have had manual tranny on a Pontiac and a Chevrolet S-10 pickup...both of those required me to push the clutch pedal in before starting, as well.

*voted accordingly*

Huh? The engine was DEAD...it was not going to start.

I needed to get back down the mountain, to where the only guy with a spark plug socket was.

I know the engine is dead. I just misunderstood the post. Thought you meant not having to depress the clutch would hinder your effort. I'm sleepy.

The law is to let the car parked with the hand brake and in gear, so if I want to start right away, I need to press the clutch (but I can go just fine driven by the starter motor )

I've regarded this as a north american idiot-resistant thing, because most every car I've ever driven overseas didn't require me to press the clutch.

GM started this in 1969,safety switch,on the clutch.

Some of the big dump trucks at my work have the clutch safety switch,
but most don't.

Yes...but my truck has a "Clutch Start Cancel" button that I can press so that I don't need to step on the clutch.
