Yes...but my truck has a "Clutch Start Cancel" button that I can press so that I don't need to step on the clutch.

Every manual car sold USDM must have the clutch depressed before it will start, the same as every auto must have the brake pedal depressed. It's second nature for me anyway. I've been known to bang the floorboard with my left foot if I hop into someone else's auto.

You mean that auto's need the brake depressed in order to switch out of gear, not to start it, right?

autos dont need the brake to be depressed to crank. To move them out of park yes cause you go straight into reverse and you can go from there

I wonder if the world knows this. I've seen lots of people start their car with the brake lights on...

Yes- Domestic

Although i dont need to depress the clutch if i so desire i can push the clutch start/cancel button, shift into neutral and simply turn the key. It is preferable to avoid using that button though.

most do. but whats the point of starting and then depressing the brake? Might as well just put your foot on the brake as you start

One more pump wanting power when you're starting. I guess the same reason people turn off the A/C before they start. My mom is adament about that!

I think this is true if you want to change out of Park to any other gears, but it's not necessary to start the engine - true for all the cars I've driven: '91 Passat, '93 Town&Country, '99 Accord.

Nope

Honda Prelude '97. However Aussie version. Anything like that wouldn't go down too well here.

My company car does, because it's riddled with useless electronics.
My own car doesn't, because it's thirteen years old

Also the reason that I don't turn on the headlights, AC, radio and all the other junk while starting. It draws enough from the battery as it is

I've regarded this as a north american idiot-resistant thing, because most every car I've ever driven overseas didn't require me to press the clutch.
It's because non-Americans are not as litigious as Americans.

yes, I hope that's what he meant. Cause I've never seen the need to depress the brake to start the car...

83 here, and no. But in my 95 Mitsu truck I do. Which is a pita because the sensors for detecting it being all the way down are starting to get a little worn out, so I sometimes have to do it 2 or 3 times before it'll start.

Hail, fellow 3Ger!

No, on my 1986 Accord. And thankfully so, because I ran out of gas in an intersection one time, and had to use the starter to get out of the middle of the road =(

Edit: I know this is for manuals, but as a side note, my Oldsmobile (68) didn't need me to push the brake to take it out of park, but both my parents vehicles do (01 F150 & 97 GMC Safari van)
