What happened to the 'War on Terrorism'? With all the technological equipment, we can't stop a bunch of teenagers operating out of their parents basement making threats? Pretty sad. What happens when these terrorists ask for billions of dollars next? Or perhaps they already have?
They're too busy busting people with $10 worth of weed. Gotta keep those penitentiaries full.

"North Korea"

I have a hard time believing the country that only has enough electricity to power one city could be behind a massive hack like this.

I think it's more likely they're just taking credit for someone else's work.

If they ARE behind it, I think this cements North Korea as the most pathetic nation in human history. I mean come on, you're pouring valuable resources into hacking a company to get a movie banned? How pathetic can you get?

Yeah, pretty sure NK is still fapping to ASCII porn.

I just can't fathom the fallout from this. Does NK hold permanent control over Sony? Anytime they want to whip out the card "if you don't do X, we'll release that data" they can. It's not like they can "return" it.

Will other countries use this tactic?

State sponsored cyber terrorism is pretty frightening. Admins have a hard enough time keeping out casual hackers.

The theater canning the show thing is troubling too. Can anyone make semi-credible threats about a movie they don't like and have them pull the plug?

So many questions.

At least one other film featuring NK has been canceled too. Many more will never get the green light. This is impacting freedom.

Yeah, it's an exceedingly narrow view to look at the specific actor/director/producer and say that they are bad so this doesn't matter.

I don't get what people wanted Sony to do here... if they did run it and by some craaaazzzzy stretch the threats were real (or even a more plausibly possibility of some non-related crazy person decides they are going to carry through on the threats themselves) and the theater (and adjacent theaters) blows up killing/harming 100s of people... then what? These "Oh Sony you SUCK!!!" comments from Hollywood and everyone else would be flipped to "See, Sony is just a greedy company. They don't care about people at all"

Sony was really screwed here no matter what they did. These celebrities and their #freedomofexpression hashtags can STFU
Sony can do whatever they want aren't some last bastion of freedom. Movie studios will shelve movies for sucking so badly... nobody cries #freedomofexpression when that happens, do they?

I don't know if I'd call stopping a Seth Rogan movie coming out major.

It's causing millions of dollars in losses?
http://variety.com/2014/film/news/box-office-neighbors-crosses-100-million-domestically-1201190503/

Only maybe around $100 million?

Not to mention they just canceled Steve Carrell's movie too.
And all the collateral damage and leaked info they did.

So ya, North Korea did make the "most successful" attack on the USA in 10 years.

That's really insane when you think of it.

Bottom line, it's about negotiating with terrorists. They've now learned that they can make threats and get what they want. If a bomber walks into a theater and demands money, they don't get it no matter what. It sets the wrong precedent. Sony should have stood their ground and if someone blew up a theater, that's on them, not Sony. Sony could have made a serious coup and released the movie for free world wide as a serious F you to the terrorists. Pulling it was the absolute worst move.

Sony is a company. It's not like they have a standing army, internal special forces security apparatus, or can engage any kind of international currency wars or negotiations, right?

Honestly--those that look at this as "negotiating with terrorists": you realize that Sony is not a country, right?

Why does everyone keep blaming Sony. It was the theater chains that pulled it first.

Because it was easier to blame Sony (1 target) than blame the theater chains.

Saw this on CNN this morning as well as if it was Sony and not the Theater chains.

News in America, dumbed down for the masses.

As for Sony releasing it online to the masses. It goes against every grain of their existence in the money and you can't watch our stuff for free movement, so....it would be very surprising if they did it, however it would be a grand counter to the threats.
