As for Sony releasing it online to the masses. It goes against every grain of their existence in the money and you can't watch our stuff for free movement, so....it would be very surprising if they did it, however it would be a grand counter to the threats.

Over at torrentfreak, it seems that Sony's leak also included tons of plans against torrent sites, and other movie streaming capable sites. The last thing sony wants is for their movie to be "free" and therefore be on any type of site like that legally.

Sorry, but I'm just not buying the fact that good hackers could actually live long enough in North Korea to ever learn how to hack in the first place. But if the "hack" actually was because the logins used the password "password", don't you think someone with an axe to grind would have already figured that out years and years ago? Isn't that like leaving your car keys in your ignition with the door unlocked, then complaining when someone steals the car?

NK "recruits" their brightest and trains them to be hackers.

The best part about this is that South Park already did it.

I love how the arguments supporting the terrorist threats are almost directly ripped right from the show.

Those were both great two-part episodes. Too bad the Viacom / Comedy Central censors had their way with episode 201. It resulted in an interesting power struggle between Matt+Trey and the network execs.

Your first 2 links were broken. I fixed them.

Why does everyone keep blaming Sony. It was the theater chains that pulled it first.

Let's think about this in context.

Several other films were releasing the same day and the final Hobbit film came out last week but is expecting to do the majority of it's business over the holiday. The last two release weeks of the year on average are worth about 500-600ish million dollars of domestic gross and are thus very important to the industry and said revenue is generated from a variety of films that other studios have major investments in. Coming off a very disappointing fall release schedule these companies all need the money.

Now onto this scene dump a major PR fiasco concerning a film that has limited appeal (R rated comedies are rarely wild commercial successes but it does happen) during the holiday season from a studio that is now basically dead in the water. Further add the threat, even as highly unrealistic as it may be, that there could potentially be a related physical attack on a theater because of running the film and the resultant public/media scare fest about if it's safe to go to the movies. You know who else doesn't like fear? Retailers. Where are lots of movie theaters located? In shopping centers. Landlords were freaking the fuck out that there would be an adverse effect on their other tenant's business.

Now if you own a theater what are your upsides? I don't see any. I think Sony knew full well they could not now release on that date but lacking the stones to either push or cancel the release beforehand shoved the responsibility onto the theater chains to wield the ax for them.

Serious question. How many North Korean sympathizers are there outside of NK?

Are they going to bomb a theater? Wouldn't the CIA, FBI, and INTERPOL know of these people?

To me it would seem like anyone who gets out of that shithole would be glad about it. Of course their population is brainwashed, but I seriously doubt the NK gov't has such a long reach globally.

Well, I don't blame him per say, but I do think we need a federal level of cyber defense. Companies will not be able to defend themselves vs. state level attacks. Hell most can barely deal with script kiddies.

I doubt it... but if they hacked Sony, they can probably hack Cineplex, AMC, or whatever theatre. And the PR is bad: "we put 1 movie and money ahead of the security of our patrons."

The theatres can "stand up for freedom" and maybe make some money on that ONE movie, or they can lower their risk of being hacked/attacked and losing millions -- meanwhile, they'll make millions more on the other 10000 movies they'll show in the future.

And this movie probably wasn't going to perform amazing well. Looks mainly like a domestic market thing like 21/22 Jump Street. The newer 22 Jump Street made about $200M domestic and $140 foreign.

Charlie Chapman is rolling in his grave. "The Great Dictator" was a big F-U to Hitler.

Now look at us now.

Smartest thing Sony could do would be to put The Interview onto every possible video on demand service they can. Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, Hulu, VuDu, Crackle, etc.

And now the "Team America" movie that some theaters were going to play in it's place have had the rights to yanked by Universal. I can hardly wait for the South Park parody of this whole controversy.

Holy crap! How have I not seen this before?!

Viacom / Comedy Central censored it. There was a power struggle between Matt+Trey and Comedy Central. The episode never re-aired and never went on southparkstudios.com

That's why you didn't see that one.

It was a 2-part episode. "201" and "202."

Well I get that much. I mean how did I not see that this was leaked almost a year ago?

The whole thing is embarrassing. The world should rightly mock America for this kind of thing. Since 911 the country has descended into a cowering cornered cat afraid of anything that moves, whether it's a plausible threat or not.

I don't know what kind of cowardly pussies we've become as a country, but it is truly sickening. We've become an embarrassment to the world.

I placed an order for the Team America DVD from Amazon just to say "Fuck you," but it is backordered by several weeks and I'll be shocked if I ever receive it.
