this complicates things a bit for me. first, no school bus services for kindergarten kids here, 2nd they change the walking distance from 1 mile to 2 mile. grief. even though our school is 3/4 mile away, i can't have a 5year old walk alone that far .

i have to take my 45 minute lunch break to go home (8 miles away), pick up/drop off kid, then come back to work for another 3.5 hours.

I think this does the youth today a favor. God knows the majority of them could use a little more exercise throughout their day.

They did this quite a few years ago here in Tacoma. They turned bus services over to a private company. :-/

I spent 3 years driving my kids to kindergarten and picking them up each day. Once they were in elementary school we did the carpool thng sometimes. Other parents were really flakey though.

When you pick up the kid and drop him off, who is watching him after you drop him off? Why doesn't that person pick him up?

Until the kid gets creamed crossing the street by some idiot texting. Two miles is way too far to have early gradeschoolers walking every day to school in a pedestrian unfriendly city like Houston (or most cities actually).

I'd rather they get their exercise in a well structured PE program than dodging the same idiots I see on the way to work every day.

wifey is scared to death of driving, no license she just got her permit and we're looking for a 2nd car so that i can teach her. yeah, she can walk down to the school, but then she'd have to drag our 1 yr old along... this is fine i guess unless it rains or snows.

Two miles? Yikes! I love walking, bike riding, etc and don't own a car but sheesh, a kid walking 4 miles a day seems a bit much. That's at least an hour and twenty minutes of walking!

back in high school, my parents had to pay if we wanted to take the bus...something like 250 for the semester if you were under 1 mile from the school.

I walked to school and back from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Slightly less than two blocks. This was in Detroit proper.

We moved to the suburbs when I started 4th grade. I rode the bus from 4th grade until I was able to buy a motorcycle in the latter half of my junior year.

Nowadays, the kids in our area are too cool to ride the cheese wagon. Their parents drop them off and pick them up from school. Meanwhile school buses are traveling the roads that are virtually empty. This area is too rural for an overwhelming majority of the kids to walk to school.

Thank god they're putting an end to those socialist busing services.

This sounds like a rather stupid idea. The school takes one expense out of its budget, but just forces a reduction in productivity in the surrounding region, as the adults need to invest additional resources on replacing what was once a reasonably efficient means of transportation.

We need more short-term solutions to long term problems.
