map a local drive on server accross internet

Ok here what I was thinking to do, and looking for any help on if its possible.

Would like to map a local drive on a server at my house, to another machine at another location over the internet. So I can save files directly to it, from either location and have it look like a regular drive to the machines.

Is possible? and if so, any advice on how to set it up?

It is possible, and there are few ways to doing it.

The differences between the methods depend on the security measures that you need to implement, as well as the way your specific system set, and how much you want to learn.

You can look into VPN.

Remote Control.

Sftp servers.

Web Drives.

etc.

i've used Himachi for this kind of purpose (in my case pretty much for grad school papers so I can view or edit them at work when I have time and then save it back on my home pc's drive). VNC will work as well, but if you don't need to use your remote pc for anything except to just access files, then use Himachi. You could even setup and ftp server on the pc. I have done that as well.

Lots of good advice here. The best answer depends on your other requirements. Note that Remote Desktop (and VNC) connections are REALLY slow for browsing large file folders because of the way they work. If you need to browse the folder on YOUR OWN PC, it can take forever, since the browsing data must be read, sent to the remote server, and then sent BACK to you for your viewing pleasure.

I agree with RebateMonger. For that reason, I have setup the PC i remote into at home with ftp services as well. A free FTP file server program is Filezilla. Good luck OP!

The webdrive looks cool, except for the $$$. Is there something like Gmail Drive, except the server runs on a computer instead?
