Maps with Ajax

First and foremost, I'll admit I'm not a coder. I'm a systems admin trying to impress my boss. He wants a map that represents the locations of our computers and would like to be able to click on that specific computer to bring up information about it.

I'm trying to take a map of our facilities that's already been drawn and saved to .pdf, add an icon where the computer is, and click on the icon to bring up the info. I'd like to be able to do this with ajax, with the pop up balloons (Google-like). This will be hosted on a web server.

I just need some ideas to get me up and running. There's lots of pre-configured open source solutions out there, and I can't help but think there might be one for this also. Maybe in PHP?

Google provides an API for Google Maps that you can use to create your own map with custom markers. I used the API to build a virtual treasure hunt where people click around to dig for and bury messages.
