The fact that Apple didn't post the RAM specs for the iPad 2 is disconcerting. You know they'd be hammering it home if it was more than the competition, which leads me to believe it is either the same 1gb, or maybe even only 512 mb. I can't imagine it being 256 or else they'd be skewered on the blogs. Software optimization aside, 512 mb can get bogged down really easily, especially with graphics intensive applications. I guess we won't find out till ifixit gets their paws on one.

I'm betting 512. In the end, the only thing that matters are results. The haters will scream otherwise, but if I'm browsing my photos and editing my movies smoothly (as every hands on seems to say) then it really doesn't matter how much RAM there is.

Oh. Clearly I didn't order

You cannot order until the 11 on Apple's online store and you cannot buy them until 5 PM at the Apple retail stores on the 11th.

I found I can get $25 off via EPP... dang temptress .

This. For example, Android devices have dual core CPUs and high end GPUs yet have such a hard time providing a smooth interface.

That's really the ultimate metric. If it does what you want and does it well, then it doesn't matter what the specs are unless you feel the need to brag about them to the e-crowd

The problem for Apple is that there are lot of people that spec shop. I agree, overall performance is what is important but Apple's competitors will use the fact that the iPad 2 has less RAM (if it does) as a marketing point.

If for no other reason, Apple should have put 1GB of RAM in it just to take that away from the Android tablet crowd. It they didn't, and the iPad 2 has only 512MB of RAM, just about every one of their competitors will scream how they have twice the RAM as the iPad 2.

I think that's why Apple didn't say how much RAM there is in the iPad 2. Android tablets have to compare each other by specs because they pretty much are the same. You can have a blazing fast tablet, but if you can't do anything with it except run benchmarks what good is that?

Oh I dunno about a "lot" of people - Apple just posted that 15 million iPads were sold in the 9-month sales period of 2010 with a >90% market share:

http://www.unwiredview.com/2011/03/02/apple-boasts-100m-iphones-15m-ipads-sold/

Seems like a pretty decent market

Their focus is on consumers - they do throw us geeks a bone once in awhile, but per my 99% Rule, it's mostly a consumer focus. Most consumers wouldn't care if the iPad only had 640K of RAM, as long as Facebook loads up quick and Angry Birds plays well

Isn't that the reason we (geeks) care about specs? Because we want our games / apps to run smoothly?

better specs =/= better performance

I agree.

I was just trying to explain a mindset of certain people. All I want is that the apps I care for to run smoothly. I don't give a Jesus if it has 256 GB of ram

Exactly.

Whomever does Apples market research needs to get a bonus.
