Grey area indeed. The tigerbelly episode I quoted made a fair point, isnt equality when you can crack jokes about everybody instead of nobody as the pc dictates today? Its the total disregard for the context of which something was said this phrase xyz is a no-go no matter what, point being you can say some pretty retarded shit without being racist if the context is right.
Do "retarded" people know they are "retarded"? I mean would they take offense? Would they *get it*? Who is getting offended here.
yes, we've gone a bit overboard with policing our humor, but it's also a net benefit to increase awareness and understanding of different sorts of people; certainly as we just learn more, and hopefully become less assholish.
To me, once you start punching down, you've crossed the line. There's a difference between making fun of someone for doing something foolish, for who they are (individually); not the person they are--that which is incontrollable. Stereotypes can be hilarious, and I think are generally fair game, but there is also history that is important to consider.
Me, I use "Retarded" for those who choose to be that way--not "Retarded" in the classic sense, but idiots who have clearly chosen to be idiots, or a particular thing that, in that moment only, perhaps, is retarded. I don't like to refer to or think of mentally disabled people as retarded. That's extremely hurtful. ...but I also know that I'm pretty much defining a word in my own way, in the way I want to use it and probably no one else will really appreciate or accept, perhaps to justify myself in using it for my own selfish purposes. I won't really defend my use of the word.
