How does that matter? He had problems with himself. He got rid of his problems by killing himself. That sounds pretty selfish to me.

Like he said... you don't understand depression.

You don't understand depression.

depression is a hell of a thing, believe me. but there is possibly no act mroe selfish that suicide. any psychologist will tell you this, as will those with actual EXPERIENCE with suicide deaths.

Of course. They have to tell themselves this since they obviously were to incompetent to prevent the suicide.

Because people who are in deep depression are not thinking rationally.

indeed. it's horrible for everyone involved, and no one should make light of it.

still, it's a very selfish act. doesn't mean that the individual is intentionally selfish--it's an inability to think beyond one's self, how others would empathize with your situation, how your actions impact others emotionally, how others really do feel about you, etc.

in the end, it does no good to get angry at the suicide victim as the bereaved are suddenly put into the most difficult of grieving states: "what did I do wrong?"

that is why suicide is explicitly selfish.

It depends entirely on the type of depression. If he had a chemical imbalance he would've been completely irrationally depressed. That type of disorder typically presents itself in the late teens and early 20's.

A lot of times someone with a chemical imbalance doesn't even truly understand why they are sad (because there is no reason) and they try to rationalize it with strange excuses like "i'll never fit in."

Drug use and alcoholism are also connected to chemical imbalances as people try to self-medicate...

It is a very very complicated issue, and without knowing everything it is very short sighted to just call someone who was mentally ill "selfish."

Edit: I agree with your last post. It is explicitly selfish, but not implicitly in all cases.

I ninja-responded before this post, but we're pretty much in agreement, here.

I personally don't know many psychologists who would call suicide selfish. Tragic possibly, but generally not selfish. I'm sure there are such psychologists around, but suicide as selfishness is not a particularly widespread or widely-disseminated idea in the mental health community.

In actuality, any depression, or any change in mood state at all for that matter, has a neurochemical basis.
