I don't think marijuana is harmless. Mind altering drugs seldom are.

But it sure seems more benign to me than alcohol, both in its health effects and its societal effects.

its not physically addictive (yet - but with the increased THC ratios i wouldnt be surprised if this changed soon) and generally harmless

theres nothing wrong with getting high every now and then and ppl can argue that when ppl are high they do stupid $hit but then again its the same with alcohol so therefore holland got it right...LEGALIZE IT!!!!

THC is not physically addictive at all, regardless of the potency of the marijuana. Secondly, there is little/no increased THC ratios. If you're speaking about the claim by the DEA that THC is 10-20 times more potent then it was 30 years ago, its already been debunked. This link explains it pretty thoroughly.

ya know, in a report i did on cocaine...... coke is actually NOT physically addictive either. it blocks receptors of a chemical which causes sad feelings. once coke wears off, the receptors are flooded with the chemical causing extreme sadness and of the course the person wants more. my point you ask? don't under estimate the power of the psyche.

i'm still pro weed though, i don't believe it is psychologicaly addictive either because people don't exactly go crazy in wanting weed.
god is perfect, man is not. man made booze but god made pot

Yeah, I realized that putting so much energy into something that doesn't really matter anyway is a fairly big waste. Plus a whole lot of self-realizations and life changes. Oh well. I ain't missing out on anything.

You're kind of splitting hairs here. Coke does flood the brain with dopamine and block it's reuptake into synapses, so it's not really coke you're addicted to, it's the dopamine rush. Either way, you need something to get that rush again.

LMFAO... I can just picture you going to town licking off a candy bar wrapper for the few specs of chocolate left.

And you're not "supposed to" smoke stems. They're harsh as hell, and they're not as loaded with THC as you think. You're just supposed to smoke the buds, no stems, no seeds. You don't smoke the fan leaves either.

Well I suspect you didn't get a good grade on your report, or your teacher was a dufus, since the DEFINING CHARACTERISTIC of all physically (physiologically is the more appropriate term) addictive substances is manipulation of the very same dopaminergic/norepinephrine system that cocaine manipulates in the classic 'reward/reinforcement' area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens shell. Cocaine is physiologically addictive, period.

And it is known that marijuana also influences the dopaminergic system, albeit in a different area of the brain and thus far less addictive, but it is addictive.

whoa nelly!

Y'all need a cold shower
far be it from me to inject some reason but...

seriously there are many misconceptions about the much maligned and revered "weed".

There is no good evidence to support the idea that it:
1. is physically addictive
2. kills any more brain cells than simply breathing.
3. causes any long term or permanent brain abnormalities (forgetfulness, sexual dysfunction, laziness, etc)
4. is a "gateway" drug

There is little doubt however that it is really bad for:
a. pregnant women
b. any situation where mental impairment is a concern (like when operating heavy machinery)
c. your lungs - like ingesting any small particulate matter is (smoke, dirt, dust) though not nearly as bad as cigs.

remember its sometimes difficult to separate the social dynamic from the actual physical evidence (ie: anecdotally it seems many "stoners" are lazy, not that this is true but even if it were it could merely be that certain [lazy] personality types gravitate toward certain activities [tokin' up]

there is actually a very good book that came out recently looking into the body of studies done on marijuana use and the basis for myths and facts about marijuana use. I'll try to get a link if I can find it...

I should note that I'm in no way an expert, and i'm pretty boring and have never used marijuana, tho i'm sure i've been stoned on second hand smoke. It will ever be illegal for purely political reasons, none of which need any basis in reason, and i'm not sure that legalizing it is necessarily a good thing. Tho I don't doubt its validity for many medicinal uses and those legitimate users will forever be discriminated against which sucks. I have a friend with an incurable and inoperable eye problem that can be releived with marijuana use, and there is no way for him to do this legally in the state of NY. His own doctor "unofficially" told him to continue scoring weed. cool eh

Anyway I'd rather see society spend its efforts and time on issues of a higher priority, like just about anything else!

I think the problem with legalization is:

1) the government loses credibility in terms of going back on long standing policy (not unlike alcohol)
2) where does it end? it would logically follow (i don't necessairly disagree) that a person should be allowed to do anything they want as long as it does not directly harm others.

I think anyone who gets caught with weed by the cops is not too smart because it means you're selling it or taking it to public places.

Any parent who goes balistic on their kid who is otherwise well off is overreacting. Its something that most of kids try, then get over.

well actually no, i got a 90% because it was very well written and backed up with the support of 3 medical reports.
besides, it was for a class called CALM "career and life management" which is basically just another class saying don't do drugs, don't have sex, be a public bitch (do stuff for other people), do this and that. basically all we did was watch movies every wednesday because we had a double block...... that movie The Whole Nine Yards was pretty funny

comparing coke to weed is not fair. to be fair you would have to compare COCA leaves with MARIJUANA leaves. a weed comparison to coke would be something like purified THC crystals. THAT would be extremely addictive like coke also but it would be a thousand times as powerful. you would need to smoke like 100 joints per day to get addicted.

sorry for double post but i just came up with something.

the reason the government does not legalize is not just a thing of morals or anything but several simple issues
-the government would not able to tax it because people could grow it in their homes
-it would just add another thing to cause accidents so it would lose LOTS of votes among mostly women, the upper class, girly men and holier than thou pieces of crap who say it causes your genetals to rot even though they never tried it
-millions of people running heat lamps 24/7 would cause a HUGE energy crisis in America, especialy in California
-just another thing to cause health problems to strain the health care system in the US, there's already problems with cancer in smokers, weed has like 10x the amount of tar and with the price drop due to legalization the use would increase, although the dangerous chemicals in weed is less such as no methanal or amonia or other screwed up things that should not be in cigarettes
-stoned people are a bit harder to detect than drunk people, although stoners are paranoid instead of lax which usualy causes safeness, they can get easily side tracked and forget what they are doing. accidents! drunk drivers just sort of run lights, stoned drivers just SLAM on the brakes at lights but they can get distracted by something like a sign which they think is sort of funny at the time.

marijuana is a very nice drug but as Snoop Dog said "PEOPLE NEED TO RESPECT IT". alcohol is a great thing that causes socialization but it's people who don't respect alcohol who abuse it and cause lots of problems for society. more people using marijuana would just cause more people who don't respect it enough to stop when they have had enough.

i think it should be illegal but not exactly punishable. it's sort of like that now but some cops are total dicks. for the most part, cops simply don't care. i was walking on the sidewalk with my friend and he was smoking a joint, i wasn't, a cop pulled us over and he said "i'm taking you to the station" and we are pretty smart kids, we know our rights and the law states that he has to have actual physical evidence or else he can't do s***. my friend popped the bud in his mouth then quickly swalled it. the cop said "s***" then he got back in his car and drove away. in Alberta you can smoke a joint on the sidewalk and a cop driving by simply won't care. it's too much hassle for such a minor crime that they don't even bother unless it's something like dealing or trafficing.

Is it harmless? No. But neither is Mountain Dew. Or crossing the street. Even living life itself isn't harmless.

So...

Sure. Legalize it. For every prohibition you create an underground.

I still won't smoke it.
