Realistically, if he'd been packing I'd say there's a pretty good chance he & his wife would be dead. In a crowd of a couple hundred gang bangers it's safe to assume there are at least a few dozen guns.

I live well North of the wealthy Detroit burbs that are largely white. If you're local, I'm talking the Hall-Road+ suburbs between Gratiot and Van *** where there are, quite literally, tens of thousands of Mc-Mansions built during the housing boom.
The whole area can be terrifying at times specifically because of the high concentrations of kids under 20. Color doesn't matter. I've had it happen to myself, sitting in a theater watching the new Harry Potter just a couple of weeks ago. 15 or so white teens, all well upper class in their Hollister and Hilfiger get-ups with iphones and new sneakers. Severely overweight trash girl wearing a belly-bearing tubetop (in the winter mind you) whips out her phone and starts texting right in front of my wife and I. Someone in the back of the theater, after about 10 minutes YELLED "Turn that damn thing off" to which she casually threw back over her shoulder "Make me bitch!".
My wife went and got management while I tried to keep my 10 and 12 year olds from hearing any more of her profanity laced crap. When management showed up, it was her friends that caused the commotion, yelling and screaming about it being unfair, and that mangement were f'rs and so on.
The simple fact is that the parents of these kids know exactly how they act but don't give a damn. They're too busy working their 10-12 hour jobs so they can keep their Mcmaxed Mcmansion Mcmortgage while paying for their cable, SUV's, and cell phones and keep their kids in the latest trends.
I mean - it's pretty fucking obvious where the total failure is when I walk out of a theater in an affluent suburb of America and have to ask my wife if any of the 14-18 year old girls standing there are hookers because of their dress. Parents in this country make me sick.
It takes a little bit more than Nicholas Cage to take on that many hoodlums.
It is a damn shame though.

If you pick a fight with a few people in a crowd of 1000's or more, you will usually be surprised at times with how many show up to help.
The latter point is this guy is serving our country and of all people should be able to have a safe evening out on his leave.

And, how the fuck would they know the bags of excrement would be waiting for them outside?If that was the case, you have to use your head. If you know there is an angry mob of teens waiting to cause you harm, there is only one smart thing to do, someone is going to have to act as the bait (it may have to be the wife). The bait will run out toward the nearest intersection keeping the angry mod close behind her. As soon as she crosses the intersection, the husband should have been able to sneak into the car (prior to the wife running out) and should be coming down the street at about 80 MPH. Once he's close to the mob, hit the brakes and slide sideways for maximum effect. That should take out a good 10-15 people if you time it properly. If any are just injured, quickly pick up your wife, and finish them off. This technique should be good for a few passes so use as needed.
Lesson, don't let any situation intimidate you. Just adapt and move forward. It may require you to step it up a level, but there is always a winning plan.
Now if there were just 10-15 girls, that should be an easy fix. Just have the wife stand behind you and then start dropping them. Pretty easy.

Also, a knife is a great defensive weapon for a mob. It doesn't attract a lot of attention (keep it hidden, don't flash it) like a gun, and by the time the crowd figures out what happened, you would have had the chance to take out quite a few people. Good times. It should definitely buy you some time to warm up the car/truck to finish them off.
Actually, the thugs in Tacoma were aware the owner and his buddies were active or former Army. Its wasn't a random drive-by, it was a neighborhood dispute that had gone-on for months.Too bad the guy didn't have some Marine buddies along to even the odds. Would have been similar to the gang bangers that randomly picked a BBQ in Tacoma years ago to open fire on - they were a bit surprised to find out that it was a bunch of Army Rangers in civies after they returned fire.
