Don't get me started on differing state driving laws, that confused the fuck out of me when I was in America and makes no sense to me at all, there should be national driving laws, unless they involve bears and the like.

New York shouldn't have the choice, the government should make a decisions and then all states have to accept it.

I disagree, and I've already stated my reasons why. Your "polar bear" example can apply just as much to guns depending on who you ask. You talk about "the will of the people" - this is the will of the people in action...the people of New York. Over half of the states in the US are individually larger than England, it would not make sense for our political system to work like yours. I circle back to the first sentence of my first reply to you - we are a very large and diverse country.

You are massively overestimating the defensive capability of a concealed weapon. It does not provide a magic shield.
If concealed carry provided a shield against murder, young inner-city black males would be practically immune to it.

I agree it isn't some magical shield, but the fact that I NEED to have my life already threatened to even give myself a chance just seems retarded.

You are, but you are not really a country, you seem to be a selection of countries that don't work together very well, this issue needs a national referendum and then a decision should be made about what to do with it.

I looked for a poll to see what New Yorkers think and couldn't find one, but I think it would be an overall good to see what the majority of the country think.

Insanely stupid on part of the marine. It's part of CCW 101 to always thoroughly check through the gun laws of any place you're visiting, and of any place you're passing through on your way to visit the aforementioned place. Ignorance is not an acceptable defense when you're carrying a deadly weapon.

That said, mandatory minimums are borderline retarded. Sometimes the intent of the law needs to be followed, not the letter. This guy deserves something like "write out the gun laws of all 50 states by hand," not any jail time.

So you think if 51% of the country thinks handguns should be outlawed, it should be outlawed nationally - even if 95% of Texans disagree? Let Texas be Texas and New York be New York. That's a part of what makes America the country that it is. If you don't like it....well, don't move here. You clearly don't have anything else to add and this discussion is just circling, so unless you have something else, I will bid you good evening.

I think that if the majority of the people want something in a democracy then that should be the law. That's democracy. If the majority want guns banned then so be it.

While this sucks ignorance of the law isn't a excuse. If it was well then all kinds of people would be doing all kinds of shit.

Democratic Republic > pure Democracy

You believe it should be a pure democracy...just because it "should be?"

You'd need to give a better reason than that. People in this thread have given you plenty of reasons why it should not be.

We are a constitutional republic, not a democracy. If the majority of New Yorkers want a law a certain way, they can have it. Some day we may abolish the idea of states, but it will not be for a very, very long time, and I for one am glad that I will not live to see that day. Good night.

I'll never understand why every state in America acts independantly from one another there seems to be no national law over there, it's like continent not a country.
It allows us to somewhat isolate stupidity.

HAL look up the difference between a Republic and a Democracy. This came up ad-nausium during the Gore vs Bush debacle and is not understood very well by most.

The USA is a Republic.
