SAN DIEGO -- At a panel discussion in San Diego Tuesday, a top Marine general tells an audience that, among other things, it is "fun to shoot some people."

The comment, made by Lt. Gen. James Mattis, came in reference to fighting insurgents in Iraq. He went on to say, "Actually, its a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. I like brawling."

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for 5 years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis continued. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

About 200 people gathered for the discussion, held at the San Diego Convention Center. While many military members laughed at the comments, a military expert interviewed by NBC 7/39 called the comments "flippant."

"I was a little surprised," said Retired Vice Adm. Edward H. Martin. "I don't think any of us who have ever fought in wars liked to kill anybody."

Mattis also discussed operational tactics of the war, calling on military members not to underestimate the capacity of terrorists.

Mattis leads Camp Pendleton's 1st Marine Division in Iraq. He is in charge of the Marine Corps combat development and is based in Quantico, Va.
Something tells me that 1,436 families feel otherwise.

I would ask the Lt. General if he has picked up a rifle and fought the insurgents in Iraq. I don't think house-to-house fighting is very fun, and it's certainly not fun if you get injured or killed :|

Meh, the military cultivates this mindset. Nothing can be done about it.

Then how do you explain this?

"I was a little surprised," said Retired Vice Adm. Edward H. Martin. "I don't think any of us who have ever fought in wars liked to kill anybody."

Sounds like you're saying all servicemen are numbnuts, which is not my experience.

Nothing wrong with what he said...the only thing wrong was the liberal vulture frenzy that loves to bash a man who speaks his mind. You need to watch, "A Few Good Men."

I don't mean to denigrate the duty that the military serves, ours or anybodys because there are certainly many noble qualities about a military such as brotherhood. Neither do I mean to say that the military purposefuly integrates this way of thinking with their teaching.

Let me rephrase. No doubt, war is ugly, and unfortunately we as humans feel a "rush" whenever our adrenalin is pumping . Even when people are dying.

"Liberal vulture frenzy"? LOL, that's some good stuff. I seriously doubt you're going to find too many soldiers (not generals who haven't fought in years) who will make comments like "it's a hell of a hoot" when refering to combat that's killed almost 1500 American troops.

And maybe I'm too touchy feely here, but killing people is only fun if you are a psychopath. Maybe it's necessary, maybe you can take pride in defending your country. But "fun"? At lthe very least, it was a poor choice of words.

Maybe during combat, but people with working brains reflect on their actions afterwords. My first guess is that most soldiers don't look back on experiences where they've had to kill others as "fun" or a "hoot".

I think you could find similar quotes from WW2 as well - was that "yee-haw foreign policy?" I remember distinctly reading in Flyboys (excellent book btw, I reccomend it) about our ships machinegunning Japanese in life-rafts, and being quite excited about it.

This is a typical example, however, of Conjur taking a specific instance and applying it universally.

edit: semi-wrong, Rainsford, read flyboys or other historical accounts of combat. I agree with the "most" statement, but many found varying degrees of excitement.

Somehow I doubt this general is on the front lines in a war where the nation is at stake.

Ummm... where did conjur do that in this thread?

So you belive that this person was directed by the administration, as part of "Yee-haw" foreign policy, to make these comments then?

Also - please don't call me a troll or I'll have to report you to the mods like you did me.

How, in any way, is that application universal? "More" doesn't meant "indicative of all." All it means is that there is some other yee-haw foreign policy but there's nothing universal about it.

I'll add this is a typical example, however, of alchemize claiming "liberals" say something in a thread without any proof.

I've called them for you.

And the topic summary is tongue-in-cheek. Tap your sarcasm detector.

I've changed that to socialists &/or leftists.

More would apply some or of some part wouldn't it?

But it's OK, cause Conjur said he was being tongue-in-cheek. That's his standard excuse everytime he gets caught in a corner.

Edit: and why is the quote-thingy not working right today?
