Some isn't all. You said universally.
I was referring to him applying universally this specific instance of a specific marine's personal feelings to the topic of foreign policy.

Why are you nit-picking the semantics of this anyhow? Conjur has already declared this as tongue-in-cheek, and he has reported me to the mods!

Because you made an unsubstantiated personal accusation. So you're saying conjur was generalizing about the general based on his comments?

Conjur has already declared this as tongue-in-cheek, and he has reported me to the mods!
Apparently he hasn't. Neither have I for the record.

No, I'm saying he was generalizing about the general being a part of foreign policy.

Yes, he has, on both counts!

I've called them for you.

And the topic summary is tongue-in-cheek. Tap your sarcasm detector.

who cares, befor all of you start your rants about the man I would like to share something with you. During OIF 2, the leaders of our country came crawling onto his door step asking him to lead the forces during OIFII. Gen Mattis, seeing that the Army was not getting things done, came up with a different approach. New training standards were developed, new training schedules were put in place. He was the one fighting to ensure that every unit going over was properly trained and prepared.
He was the one who started buying the armor protection.
So before you rant and rave about some of his comments which seem to be taken the wrong way. He is the one responsible for so many service members comeing home alive.
There is nonething wrong with a leader who will tell you like it is. I say  for Gen Mattis.................

True Warriors respect the enemy. I guess thats hard to do when you are shooting them from 20,000 feet in the air or from over a 1,000 feet away with a state of the art sniper rifle and night/thermal vision. Funny he talks about manhood. I would be very hesitant to question the manhood of men who fight against the most powerful army the world has ever known. I would be VERY hesitant to question the manhood of a man who engages an M1-Abrams with an old Soviet Rocket Launcher and a bandolier of grenades. I could however question the manhood of a man who sits in some heavily armored bunker/green zone/command center and talks a lot of crap.

Perhaps some of you high and mighty's who think this general is off his rocker should read this.

http://www.privateline.com/war/patton.html

What would you all do to him today? It is easy to sit at home and sneer at this man if you have never served or have never been in combat. I do not agree with everything he said, but I do understand the context in which he said it.

Are all military people like him? NO. So why lump all military people in the same category, maddogchen? It is quite obvious you have never served.

SAN DIEGO -- At a panel discussion in San Diego Tuesday, a top Marine general tells an audience that, among other things, it is "fun to shoot some people."

The comment, made by Lt. Gen. James Mattis, came in reference to fighting insurgents in Iraq. He went on to say, "Actually, its a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. I like brawling."

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for 5 years because they didn't wear a veil," Mattis continued. "You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them."

About 200 people gathered for the discussion, held at the San Diego Convention Center. While many military members laughed at the comments, a military expert interviewed by NBC 7/39 called the comments "flippant."

"I was a little surprised," said Retired Vice Adm. Edward H. Martin. "I don't think any of us who have ever fought in wars liked to kill anybody."

Mattis also discussed operational tactics of the war, calling on military members not to underestimate the capacity of terrorists.

Mattis leads Camp Pendleton's 1st Marine Division in Iraq. He is in charge of the Marine Corps combat development and is based in Quantico, Va.
Something tells me that 1,436 families feel otherwise.

Nothing wrong with what he said...the only thing wrong was the liberal vulture frenzy that loves to bash a man who speaks his mind. You need to watch, "A Few Good Men."

"Liberal vulture frenzy"? LOL, that's some good stuff. I seriously doubt you're going to find too many soldiers (not generals who haven't fought in years) who will make comments like "it's a hell of a hoot" when refering to combat that's killed almost 1500 American troops.

And maybe I'm too touchy feely here, but killing people is only fun if you are a psychopath. Maybe it's necessary, maybe you can take pride in defending your country. But "fun"? At lthe very least, it was a poor choice of words.

As much as I'd like to agree with you, Marines are a special breed; that type of sentiment is not uncommon for them. There's also no need to appoligze for it, fighting is life for a Marine. It takes a certain kind of person to JOIN the Marines, and that's BEFORE they mold you into killer the U.S. needs you to be. If anything let this be an example as to why having marines as peacekeepers and occupiers DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, the very presense of Marines in a area that is no longer a war zone (technically speaking) leads me to "question" our current posture in Iraq. Are we at war? Are we peacekeeping? Are we nation building? Or are we trying to do all three at once?

Whatever makes you feel good. My point is people have been spewing this type of talk since the dawn of time. To get upset about it just shows how uneducated you really are. Some people look at war as a game. Us vs them. I don't agree with it, but they are out there. Again though, I will say, if you have never served then you don't understand.

file this under "J" for same old Junk.

Marine bashing articles pop up 10 times a year, every year, war time or peace time, as far back as I can remember. The media loves to hate Marines, and this is nothing new.

Did he not say what he said? Nice attack on the motives that has nothing to do whether this guy deserves criticism.

Maybe because you are ruthless and show no humanity. I guess thats what is needed for your profession but I have a hard time understanding what makes you tick and many other people do. You should realize that comments like this will bother civilians a lot.

Man you even argue like a marine. Explain what? Anyone who enjoys killing is a psycho and/or bad, I thought this was normal Christian/Jew/Hindu/Buddhist stuff. You can legally kill people that doesn't make it moral and that doesn't make what the general said right. When other military members are disturbed why what you say in this era its pretty bad dude.

You won't be able to explain it, but nice try weaseling out of it.

He said idiotic things and made pathetic generalizations about people we're supposed to be helping. If that's the kind of things generals say why did an admiral mention it was bizarre? Why have I never heard them say such assinine things when they're on tv all the time?
