Try to think of a Marine as a resource, a tool (not trying ot be offensive.) When applied to the correct siuation under the correct circumstances, performance is exceptional. When applied to an innapropriate situation, your output may be much different than wahat was expected. Pretty much think of Marines as the few guys in our society that will go anywhere, do anything, and kill anyone they are directed to because that's what they exist for; that's what they're trained to do. That's limiting the scope of their abilities quite a bit, though I'll admit. After all their slogan is "no better friend, no worse enemy." Sounds good, but it kind of confounds me a bit. In the stage that Afghanistan is in an Iraq hopefully will arrive to, I don't think Marines are the best choice for nation building and peace keeping and when their used in such a way you get unexpected results such as the Generals comment.

Yep, that's been my observation too, from my past experience with them.

Me Marine - Me Kill.
Me a Bad Ass Marine - Me want to Kill - Kill, Kill, Kill.

That's what I saw from them in Vietnam.

Even if you have grunts who are thugs (which is what you guys are describing them; not me) you can still have officers (especially at a high level) who are not morons.

So the guy's job is an infantryman. So when it is it a crime to enjoy your job?

That is what they do. He enjoys it. What is the problem?

Except he's a general, so he's not really up front and in the infantry.

Marine general speaks bluntly about war. Navy offended. Am I supposed to be surprised by this?

Liberal doesn't mean pacifist. Some of the toughest SOBs that ever sat in the Oval office were FDR and Harry Truman. Even Eisenhower and Nixon would be classified as liberals in many respects, hardly pacifists though.

George McGovern flew heavy bombers in WW2. JFK commanded a PT boat and went toe to toe with Kruschev over the Cuban missile crisis.

So there's no reason to associate "liberals" with weakness. That's part of the giant marketing campaign that started in Reagan's era, it's a giant fiction.

Now, as to the General's comments, I don't know a darn thing about leading Marines, military people have to kill the enemy, and it's not my place to tell them how to live with that burden we place on them. If a level of bravado works for them or his troops, then I don't see what he said as all that difficult to understand.

What does the perception that certain people beat their wives have to do with wars?

You can legally kill people that doesn't make it moral and that doesn't make what the general said right. When other military members are disturbed why what you say in this era its pretty bad dude.

Enjoys killing??? Where does it say that. I see a Marine who knows what his job is during war and sees no problem executing (no pun) that job. I don't see where it says he enjoys it. Sure there are a few out there who love it too much. As for your "You can legally kill people" quote. Um NO. We can't legally kill anyone. During war or when fired upon we have the right to fire back and if necessary kill someone, but we don't have the legal right to just go kill for the sake of killing.

I never said that. I was talking about people who DID NOT serve. This RETIRED Vice Adm. is just trying to get his name in the paper. He is a retired boat captain, what does he know about close range combat? Go serve your country, get up close to the action, only then can you understand what this guy (Lt. Gen. James Mattis) is talking about.

Ruthless and show no humanity??? You have been watching too many movies. You obviously don't know any Marines. If you do then they are definately not indicative of the whole Corps. Sure we are trained and trained well. When in a combat situation it is kill or be killed. PERIOD!!! I don't give a rats arse what you think of the method we use in which to carry out that plan. I only care that myself and my squad come back home ALIVE. I also don't care if you or other civilians understand what makes us tick. You want to know what makes a Marine tick? Defeating the enemy and coming home.

Is it just me or is it just a tad ironic for alchemize to be making an issue of this threads summary after he started this thread.

What does that overgeneralizing about people beating their wives have to do with your squad getting home? Oh right. it doesn't.

Not really, since I made that thread subtitle in a parody of a Conjur thread.

I dont see anything wrong with this, he is a great American soldier who is happy to kill evil terrorist scum. We should all be happy over this. Why are we concerned if this is a insult to the enemy?

The enemy has been insulting America all these years, making fun of our imcompetent leaders and has a attitude of Americans being cowardly and lazy. Two wrongs dont make a right of course.

He is a real man who expresses his feelings, many American civilians and many American soldiers possibly feel this way. As long as they do their duty and defend America, I would care less how they treat the enemy -- verbally that is.

This from a guy who doesn't even understand when people are owning his absurd posts? LOL.

Anyway, if you don't understand the part about people beating their wives, you didn't read the article.
