Has anyone else been keeping an eye on the newest Mario Party title? I've been waiting for it for some time now, as it fit well as the next local co-op title for my Wii U (to go with MK8 and SSB).
Sadly, the reviews are coming in, and they're quite disappointing. Just to list some of the primary lowlights:
--Map traversal is still group-based, like in MP9 (the primary reason we got MP8 over MP9 when the decision came up). Instead of having each player move around the board freely, everyone moves together in a car, but each individual dice roll affects only the active player.
--Mini-games don't occur after each turn. Instead, there are mini-game spots to land on, meaning you could play a lot or a little in a game, which can make it really fun or really boring.
--Bowser Party is fun, but some have said it's really only fun for the person who is Bowser, as the rest of the game mode is the same as always.
--The mini-game selection is pretty good, but mostly derivative, and a little on the stale side.
-amiibo Party falls flat, and hard. The mode takes place on a small, square board, with the boards differing only slightly by which amiibo board you're playing on.
--While playing, each person has to touch his amiibo to the GamePad before each roll. One reviewer said it ended up exactly as I expected it would, where all of the people handed the amiibos over to the GamePad user, and he controlled all of the amiibo-touching (he also said dice rolls, but IDK if that's actually the case--that all rolling is done on the tablet).
--Not all amiibos work with the game. Only the ones whose characters are in the game (IGN lists just 9: Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Wario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Peach, and Rosalina). So, no Pikachu, Samus, Link, Ike, etc.
Overall, it seems like a game I will skip. Two reviews gave it a 6/10, while one gave it a 5.5/10. Not good numbers.
