It was a pretty bizarre accident, and dangerous as hell because he instantly lost steering and front brakes on one of the fastest parts of the track.
Yeah, but he was headed straight into the gravel plus the tire wall at an angle. Kovaleinen tboned the barrier at a much higher speed when he was at McLaren and suffered very minor injuries (a bruise iirc). Those cars are insanely safe now, not to say something horrible couldn't happen, but seeing all the crashes that have happened and how the drivers just get out and walk away shows the immense forces those cars can handle vs 10-20 years ago.
edit: also how highly strung the cars are if the front breaks off while under normal race condition braking
