The protagonist in Numb3rs (Charlie Epps played by David Krumholtz) uses certain pens (or markers) with which he writes on glass. These types of markers are also used in the movie "A Beautiful Mind" (John Nash uses them to write on glass).

1.) What kind of markers are these? What are they called?

2.) Can they be erased without any residual marks once you use them to write on glass?

3.) If they can be erased, do you have to use some special kind of solvent to do this or is a moistened (with water) cloth enough?

4.) What other materials can you write on using them (and also erase them later)?

Just wanted to know. They seem really interesting.

Thanks in advance.

They use grease pencils, also known as china markers.

I've never used them but you can supposedly wipe it off with just a paper towel (although this would probably need to be used within a reasonable time frame). If you left it on for a long time you would probably need to use a solvent.

You can use them on any hard, non-porous material and glossy paper.

Hey, thanks. I had no idea what they were called. I did a google search and seemed to get many opinions (some conflicting).

Some people say they use dry-erase markers to write on glass. And they also mention that China markers are hard to wipe off. Some people say wet erase markers are the best.

Wikipedia mentions that grease pencils are resistant to moisture but can be wiped off with a paper towel (if it's resistant to moisture, does that mean a dampened cloth won't work?).

Some people also mention that dry erase markers can be wiped off with a paper towel.

It's all a bit confusing.

I was just looking for something that can write on glass and can be wiped off with a paper towel or a dampened cloth.

Well there are also chalk markers that will write on glass. Some brands will come off with a damp cloth and some require ammonia or the like. Crayola even makes window markers and window crayons.

Those might be better options for you.

Also, this might be helpful.

House MD did this often though they used the whiteboard far more often. Why wouldn't dry erase markers work? Chalk would probably scratch glass

Crayola makes washable window markers. They need water to be washed off, though.

We use these in the Army for writing on maps. The ink is permanent insofar as about the only think that removes it is alcohol. Instant hand sanitizer does the trick to remove the ink with no residue left behind, although I'd avoid the hand sanitizer with aloe and stuff in it.

I've used them to write on the windshield of my tactical vehicles, etc., as well as on my map overlays.

Dry erase markers work well on glass as well, though they wipe off much easier than these do.

I draw on windows at the office all the time, more room to work; and I like to look outside to clear my head every now and then.

Normal dark colored dry erase markers always worked best for me, easy for sketching out an idea. Zig Posterman liquid chalk is what I use when I'm working something out that I don't want to to be wiped away easy. It will come off with a wet rag, but you may want to fallow up with some Windex if you notice some smudging.

Dry erase markers work fine. I know because I have a glass dry erase board in my office and use those markers on it all the time. Works much better than the melamine boards.

We used grease pens at BK to mark sandwiches. So on the plus side, they are food safe.

Back in the day bowling used to score on glass for the overhead projectors and used special pencils that were kind of like grease pens, but different. They were easy to clean up, a slightly damp paper towel or napkin was all it took. You could probably still find them around.
