Market Study: Mac owners think they are extraordinary

I was listening to Marketplace on NPR at work, and they had this somewhat interesting story about a market study done by interviewing ~7500 computer users. The result was that the typical Mac owner bears a eerie resemblance to the Mac guy as portrayed in the Mac vs. PC commercials. Which, may be good for some people but the downside is that the sort of smug arrogant attitude of the Mac stereotype does bother some Mac owners.

Anyhow, I thought it was interesting since there does seem to be a sort of dislike for those Mac vs. PC ads and now there is at least some sort of concrete study to demonstrate why many people dislike those ads. As an aside, if it even matters, I can care less about what people think but I still found the story somewhat interesting.

edit: Included "Market Study" in title as I just now realized the thread title was a bit aggressive.

I went to watch a mac vs pc ad on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7sWKgy3qog , was a comment:

-They do not freeze up as much
-They have better programming system
-Better applications come with it
-less chance of errors
-No freaking hard drive taking up all the space
-more simple and easy to understand
-every system is not so different unlike the change from xp to vista
-leopard has a new time machine
-better design
-want me to go on?

^ lol 'leopard has a time machine' what a dumbfuck.

When are you idiots going to realize that Apple users are no different than, say, Lexus Drivers. Some (NOT FUCKING ALL) of them are smug assholes who think they're better than you because they have something more expensive and shiny.

STOP WHINING, you sound like fucking 5 year olds that can't have a cookie.

A couple of the developers at my workplace switched over, and I'm tempted to join then. For personal use I'll stick with PC for games, but other than that, I see that Linux and OSX have a lot to offer.

lol we all know this. It's just funny to see the reasons some smug mac users have to support macs. Didn't reading that quote even make you smile?

My fiancee's twin sister is one of those smug Mac users.

Drives me up the FREAKING wall.

She refuses to use my rig cuz it has vista and is too slow and buggy for her.

I love using my Mac Mini at work, I can do almost everything that I can do on a PC. My PC can do many things that the Mac can't however. Bottom line is this, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. To say one is superior to the other is just not true. Certain things will be easier / better on a PC and vice versa. It's all a matter of personal preference. If I could I would be running OSX / XP / Ubuntu at home, different OS's for different tasks.

I agree. It's a derivative of the same arguement every time anyway.

Just get over yourself and realize that these types of people only make up a small percentage of either side of the argument.

Well, I do prefer macs in that it comes w/ a terminal. I find it a superior environment for development over windows.

However, I like windows for its actual ease of keeping it secure (when you know what you're doing). It doesn't make me feel almost as dumb (although, a lack of a built-in terminal negates that... but there's always cygwin, SSH, putty, etc...). It has more games on it hehe.

I actually find windows to be far more customizable on a personal level. I also think the Windows platform in general is just superior in an office environment (networking, centralized email, directory, etc..). Although it's a pricey setup, it's quick, convenient for both sides (IT and users), tons of features in active directory, and surprisingly secure than most people think. I don't think running a server running OSX w/ LDAP is as practical... but I've never tried it.

Well, doesn't matter anyways. I use FC8, WinXP, and OSX at the same time everyday anyways.
Competition is awesome (even from the free software front haha). All three has their definite pro's.

And ya, I think a lot of the ad's "complaints" against Vista are unwarranted, and prey on those who are sorely computer illiterate who shouldn't be even be owning any piece of technology.

I also hate Mac's marketing campaign. They have a nice developers platform on a rather user-friendly, no-nonsense, commercial-class OS. Market that instead. Market its history. This whole bashing thing is getting old, and churns out a smug client-base. haha.

You can care less? How much less, and why couldn't you have started caring less before making yet another thread on a tired old topic like this?

The funny thing is that I don't even own an Apple right now. I am just tired of the same retarded topic being regurgitated over and over as if it were breaking news.

Or maybe it was a new market study that was broadcasted on 23-Feb-2008, therefore it is, by definition, new information.

I thought what was interesting about this news story was the fact that it wasn't just some random bitching by people on the intraweb - either here at ATOT or elsewhere - but an actual study that was performed. Appears you didn't bother to read the information in the provided link and just assumed it was the same 'regurgitated' information.

Again, this is the interesting part, it is in fact not a small percentage of people, but rather a seemingly significant percentage of the people.

I suppose I made the mistake of thinking that people on ATOT would have been interested in an actual study that related to this topic instead of just the typical ranting, or raving, that goes on.

I've yet to determine which I find more annoying.

The Mac Zealots or the Mac Haters.

Right now I'd say its about even.
