-less chance of errors
-No freaking hard drive taking up all the space
-more simple and easy to understand
-every system is not so different unlike the change from xp to vista
-leopard has a new time machine
-better design

ive had a very powerful mac (and am on it now) at work for the past 3 years and a crappy PC up until a few months ago. now my PC is a fast vista machine.

back then i preferred to use my piece of shit XP machine over my mac for development. i cannot stand macs.

if you develop on macs in xcode it's even worse. its the worst development experience i've ever had. xcode is hte biggest piece of crap IDE i've ever used in my life.

srsly i hate it! but srsly too, i dont think i would hate macs as much if i didn't develop on one.

Or maybe it was a new market study that was broadcasted on 23-Feb-2008, therefore it is, by definition, new information.

I thought what was interesting about this news story was the fact that it wasn't just some random bitching by people on the intraweb - either here at ATOT or elsewhere - but an actual study that was performed. Appears you didn't bother to read the information in the provided link and just assumed it was the same 'regurgitated' information.

I agree. It's a derivative of the same arguement every time anyway.

Just get over yourself and realize that these types of people only make up a small percentage of either side of the argument.

Again, this is the interesting part, it is in fact not a small percentage of people, but rather a seemingly significant percentage of the people.

I suppose I made the mistake of thinking that people on ATOT would have been interested in an actual study that related to this topic instead of just the typical ranting, or raving, that goes on.

Do you call it new information when someone sticks their hand in a fire and discovers that it is hot? Maybe if they were the first person to ever do it. A couple of gadget sites and even some Sociology students at Yale (I believe it was Yale) did these "studies" in the past with largely the same results, and they were even posted about on AnandTech.

I would have probably locked this one as a repost despite the "study" being new, as I did here, but I only do that when I can find the other thread to link to. Unfortunately, we have many people with nothing better to do that bitch about Apple commercials, plus a borked Search function, so it was not nearly as easy to find the appropriate threads.

I just fired up my old PC that I haven't used in, oh, 8 months or so and it still works even with the abuse it's taken. I've been using a Macbook Pro lately.

It's all a matter of personal preference. If I could I would be running OSX / XP / Ubuntu at home, different OS's for different tasks.

well, gaming=windows, server/power user=linux, mac=teh suck

I didn't read most of the thread yet, but this quote on that link just kills me

MARISSA GLUCK: The character of the Mac guy is almost too perfectly cast. He is smug. He is condescending. He's just that uber-hipster you love to hate. It just makes you want to slap him.
It's so true

Can't agree much more. There are people who tend to like the Macs they use at school (20" big screen, people with shitty computers at home, bound to then associate this nicer computer with Mac, and that it cannot otherwise attained via PC), and I ask them why they like it. They tell me it's just easier to use.

Then I posed the question, how much easier can it get than the simple layout of Windows.

Their answer, "it gets alot easier actually." And when asked what was easier, they gave responses like, it's only one click to get to the "graphics" folder they use for photoshop, the primary purpose for those particular Macs.

I replied that it's only a simple shortcut, and the only other thing is that it was only like 2 clicks to install new fonts.

Apple has alot of really intuitive features, but I haven't seen many people who actually know how to utilize them, and get give a false praise for their "wow" factor.

Why are Macs "so much better for video editing and digital design"?

they arnt, photoshop runs exactly the same as it does on a PC, so does any other major cross platform program that does that kind of wrok

the only real reason to use one and not the other is program pref, mainily Final Cut and apature

That's what I thought. Mac fanboys always tell me there Mac is awesome video and design. Except there are two problems: They can never tell me why Macs are better. And none of them even do video or design stuff.

That's also what they said to me, and same situation, couldn't explain why they were better.

Seriously though: Are Macs better for video and design stuff? And Music stuff? Or are PCs better? Or are they the same? They use pretty much the same ahrdware now, so unless Macs have better apps or something, I don't see why using a Mac for those things would be any better than using a PC. Anyone have a real, non-biased answer?

It was mentioned earlier. Photoshop is the same for Mac and PC, no difference there. Premiere also runs the same for Mac and PC, but Mac has Final Cut which many people prefer.

I think the main reason why people think Macs are better for video, music, graphics editing is because it comes with iMovie, Garage Band, and iPhoto, etc. They are very basic programs that usually have freeware equivalents available on the PC, but they ignore that and the fact that they are essentially forced into paying for them when they buy a Mac.

QFT - if choosing between Windows or Mac for developing, the choice is obvious.

Thankfully there is a third, much better choice for development

Apple users are smug, windows users are dumb, and linux users are the small minority people prefer not to talk about (Smug-nerds if you must know)

Hurray for Stereotypes!

I have to be honest though, when questioning people why they get macs, the answers you get can be surprising, ranging from "I thought the notebook looked better" to "Apples G3 is 5000x faster then any intel processor available" (these ones make me laugh, especially since make went to an intel processor and claimed a big speed boost....)

My boss has been a PC/Linux user for years, bought a mac and suddenly PC's are evil and full of problems while the mac is a gift from god (aka Steve Jobs) He could not however answer the following question:

Why is there PC emulation for the MAC but no MAC emulation for the PC??
