yes, but it's the little "syntheses" that can be scary

My parents just split up. After 25 years of marriage, and a lot of close close family on both sides.
It is very strange indeed.. my view of relationships hasn't changed much, but marriage is a scary thought.

Because, for the most part, we live much more conservatively if we're married - rather than single. This keeps us out of trouble - and out of danger.

Marriage = Death, only in the wrong relationships. If one spouse or the other isn't fully contributing to the relationship, then, yes, it will be a horrible situation. However, if both spouses are contributing and getting good things out of the relationship, then marriage can be a good thing for both husband and wife.

With that being said, I've been married for nearly 17 years - and don't feel dead yet. :Q

wje, I dont think thats so much Dr phil as it is common sense.

I had a psych prof who has a good amt towards his psych phd that says that dr phil is a crock and the only reason for his popularity is the fact that he's got oprah exposure.

I still have no idea whether or not I'll ever get married. I have never been married, but have cohabitated (shared a checking account, bought furniture, etc) several times before and I have a son, so yeah, I've for the most part, been married.

Some of the obvious benefits are very appealing; someone to grow old with and talk to. Someone to be there fro you to talk to when you need it. Someone to share you triumphs big and small with.

Some of the obvious downsides I have seen too much of in my own past relationships and my friends' failed marriages; the loss of "self", the loss of your free time. The constant nagging about your hobbies, ie. "you're gonna work on the car again? we're having dinner with Bob and Cindy tonight!!!" etc. I HATE having my balls busted...when a woman starts to nag me, I just want to pack my sh1t, hop in the truck and split for parts unknown.

I guess I should just buy a dog. Companionship without all the talking.

Reminds me of an old joke:

A man and his young son were walking thru the supermarket when they came upon the "family planning" products.

The boy pointed to the boxes of condoms on the shelves and asked "Daddy, what are "condoms?"

His father replied "well son, they are used by a man to prevent pregnancy and disease when a man and a woman make love."

The son then asked "Well, I see a box of 3, a box of 6 and a box of 12. Why do they come in different size boxes?"

The father replied,

"Well son, the box of three is for high school boys; one for Friday night, one for Saturday night and one for Sunday night."

"The box of six is for college boys; two for Friday night, two for Saturday night and two for Sunday night."

With a sigh he said "The box of twelve is for married men; one for January, one for February, one for March...."

Ba-dum, bum-kish! Thank you!! I'll be here thru Sunday....

Yep...and that's pretty much why my 15yr marriage is over (should be final by spring). I was putting everything into it the last few years and we'd even gone the counseling route (which seemed to be working for a whle). But, she just wouldn't reciprocate. After she moved out (I was about to kick her out anyway), I realized how much better off I was. And, even though I've been unemployed now for almost 5 mos. I still feel better than I did this time last year!

As for getting married again? Hmmm... The Magic 8Ball says Reply hazy, try again.
