My wife's engagement ring and wedding band are both platinum and we couldn't be happier, they are also both custom designs and 100% unique like her. If you are investing money in a high quality diamond it's worth going with a high quality setting that isn't going to change color over time like white gold will. The "alternative" metals like tungsten and titanium are great for guy's rings because they are highly durable and relatively inexpensive so you can afford to spend more on your woman's set.

my original wedding band is gold. Kinda outgrew my gold wedding band. Have a titanium wedding band which I wear daily now

White gold. It was lighter, cheaper and looked about the same (though not quite as white as a platinum band). That way I had more money to spend on the wife's rings. I'm not a jewelry person so I really didn't care that much. If they had something like titanium/tungsten/stainless steel bands when I got married, I might have went with it, but it seems to be a relatively recent trend.

EDIT: I must say it is very comfortable. So comfortable, I forget I'm wearing it. (That comment would earn me a smack in the head from the SO. )

Not married quite yet, but her ring and band (she's not wearing it yet of course) are a custom platinum. My band will be a platinum as well. It will probably be something like this, but not from Mark (although he does great work).

I've been told that normal yellow gold can make a diamond look yellow.

I went with white gold because it was cheaper. I put the money that was saved by not buying platinum into getting a better diamond.

Actually, that is not exactly true. Yellow gold is recommended for lower color diamonds (say J,K..) b/c it complements the diamonds color and makes is look better than it really is. Platinum is very white and should only really be used to set better quality diamonds (D-H). After that, you probably want to consider yellow gold.

But yeah, you generally don't want to set a premium colorless diamond in yellow gold. that would defeat the whole purpose of purchasing a top quality diamond.

NO reason to spend alot of money on a wedding ring.

I got white gold. Why? Because I've never been able to keep track of jewelry. Four years and counting on this one.

I have a titanium band. Much lighter than a gold band, looks great, and it is harder than a 15 year old's erection.

I'm the same ... titanium for mine, love the fact that it weighs nothing, I don't even notice when I'm wearing it.

Hers is white gold, and it has been 5 years now, 1 cleaning and no discoloration whatsoever.

Wife wanted white gold. She got white gold. It looks pretty much the same as when I bought it six years ago.

I don't even wear my wedding band anymore. It got damaged and was hurting my finger like crazy.

I actually like the weight of gold/platinum. I considered a titanium band, but actually did NOT like how light it was.

Tungsten

From Wikipedia:
Tungsten is also beginning to see uses in jewelry. Its hardness makes it ideal for rings that will never scratch, and will in turn not need polishing (this is especially good for brushed designs).

Also, it's inexpensive (usually).

my band is titanium.. both of hers are white gold

edit: oh, and the reason why is because she doesn't like yellow gold... i'm sure platnium would have been just as nice, but the ring she wanted was in white gold, so that's the one we got... and for mine, i just went with the cheapest metal.. they all look the same to me.. it's not about what it's made of or how much it cost, it's what it symbolizes
