Best tip in fighting is to avoid the fight in the first place

Haha. On a similar note, I had one of the trainers at a boxing gym tell me (about 10 minutes after I first got there) "If I find out you're using the training here to get into fights, I'll personally fuck up your face!".

I prefer instructors who do the pantomime - they're just funnier to watch.

Anyhow, as I've said, I'm completely serious about the break-fall comment; certainly more of a life-saver than learning any silly combinations or chokes (with all due respect)!

.

Completely serious! All the instructors that I've had - regardless of style - responded to "what happens if you're mugged?" type questions with a pantomime kick to the shins and a run in the opposite direction. I'm certainly not interested in attempting a teep-1-2 or a juji-gatame on someone that may or may not have a gun handy.
I am confused. What kind of mugging scenario does not have a weapon prominently displayed? What, the guy just walks up and says give me your money?

Getting mugged? Throw your wallet down to one side, and sprint your ass off. Most just want the $$$ and will go for that first.

But, here is the reality of trying to defend against a serious knife attack.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdJAgfO2GQc&feature=player_embedded

1.run

2.stun and run

3. you have no choice but to confront them, try to capture and conquer

As they show, a quick parry and simultaneous head shot, then GTFO is by far the best chance. Stun and run if you must, but a shin kick? I would personally opt for the parry+headshot. Particularly since my pimp hand is strong :sneaky:

That's a good video and shows really how up close a knife is far more dangerous to deal with than a gun. Even in the best defense you are going to get cut usually...in many gun defenses usually no injury results.

A parry headshot is good if it connects, but you also open up your body attacking high. keeping your vitals protected and taking out a knee or causing pain to the shin gives you a second to run.

A jacket is a good defense weapon to a knife...(not wearing it, but holding it out). You can use it to wrap up the weapon and at the very least throw it to block their vision and run.

The mistake almost everyone makes is trying to deal with the situation rather than leave it.

Even with tasers and pepper spray people get fucked because they get the shot in or spray out, but then think to confront the assailant not realizing they will come back to 'life'

"I would probably never live with myself if I actually permanently hurt anyone"

Shoot to kill not hurt.

You have loads of guns and don't know if you could shoot someone? Do you hunt? Maybe get rid of your safe queens?

I suggest boxing and running. You don't want to be on the ground in a street fight in unfamiliar territory/hood. My friend an awesome CA state champ wrestler tried that in Inglewood outside a liquor store and had a ghetto pony on him...lost badly. Keep in mind this guy could work grown men bikers and stuff at 16. Numbers, weapons, dogs, etc invalidate all that training (that why they make guns and feet)

I suggest a 50 lb heavy bag in garage 20 min a day coupled with 100m x 20 sprints on 3 min intervals. This will build explosive power and allow you to hit like horse and GTFO quick.

Ive done bjj for almost two years now and once you get past the beginner status of using all your strength in trying to win, its not much of a crazy workout. Bjj is a lot about technique and patience compared to sheer strength. Now given that both guys have the same level of technique, strength will be the deciding factor.

Shoot to stop is more like it. Shoot to kill is movie silliness. You shoot, stab, hit, punch, kick and stun targets to get them to stop attacking you. They may die in the process, that's just a byproduct of their actions against you. You do not shoot to kill, you shoot to stop.

Please note;

Chance of tripping>>>>> Chance of avoiding a potential fight>>> Chance of talking your way out of a fight>> Chance of getting into a fight> Chance of getting into a fight with someone that knows what they're doing/sober.

Throwing your wallet down and GTFO would qualify as "avoiding a potential fight".

Exactly. Let's break it down:
  • You never know what kind of collateral the guy may have - he may brandish a knife but may have a gun in his pocket, he may have friends sneaking up behind you, he may talk to you/ask for directions to get close/let your guard down and sucker-punch you, etc. Too many variables, always assume the worst in a self-defense scenario.
  • Why give him the initiative and "wait for a counter" if you're aware that you're in danger and can't get away? That's like a car racer starting a lap behind everyone and assuming they can catch up - idiotic, unrealistic, and he'd likely get fired; you'd be worse off.
  • Assuming your imaginary mugger and yourself are of the same physical abilities, why do you have your head head stuck up your ass so far as to think he'd miss his attack and yours would connect, especially w/ no training? (Not being rude [well, a little], but that's just assuming way too much on your part, and even if you could pull it off, it's terrible advice to give for general self-defense)
  • Reasons my instructors recommend the venerable-ancient-and-secret-style of "shin kick and GTFO"-fu:
    1. Most sensory perception - especially in males (unless your mugger is a chick in which case you're screwed) are sensed through the eyes, which your hands - connected to the arms, which are connected to the shoulders, are high enough to keep in view at all times.
    2. Legs have a better reach than arms (duh).
    3. You can use your ams as a feint, cover yourself, etc.
    4. Kicks to the crotch are high enough for the other party to scoop your leg/upsets your balance too far.
    5. Low kicks can be quick and affect their mobility, a + if you're trying to get away.
    6. Even if you miss, you can recover your balance quickly enough, and your hands are free for a follow-up/cover yourself if need be.
    7. You can wear steel toed boots.
    8. It's just plain fun to see BAMFs dance a little jig in response to a question.

I can go on and on; but as far as self defense goes - nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is a better deterrent than some courtesy and common sense, and not a goddamn one person will win a fight against a gun.

Taking a break from the thread-hijack and going back to the OP: Breakfalls, dude. Seriously.

(Did you start at a club? And if so, which one?)

That's interesting...I wrestled at high school level and it was pretty grueling. I wasn't in it to win as I started my Junior year where many had been doing it since middle school, but it was an awesome cardio and fat losing workout for me.

I was also doing football and martial arts at the same time...it was the hardest part of my day.

It's shoot to kill. You have to realize that. You shoot someone they may die. You try and shoot to stop like a knee or arm you are looking at getting fucked.

Body shot / chest. Double tap...GTFO and call 911.

Situationally speaking, everyone that posted after me, are all correct; The rest is just semantics. I am certain HannibalX is not saying he would not shoot center mass either, again, just semantics.

Yeah, wrestling is hardcore. Much respect.

They call BJJ the gentle art, and with good reason. My instructor is only 5'5" 135lbs, and I can do nothing with him. His skill is so high, that he can defend anything my big ass does no sweat, literally.

With the other new players, I can power my way into full mount and attack an arm for an Americana or something. But the good players? Yeah, just surviving is all you can hope for. Likely though, you are going to either tap, or get put to sleep or worse. Like boxing, it is extremely scientific in how they approach it.

AznAnarchy99 is exactly right, and I would likely be owned by him rolling. Despite any weight and strength advantage I bring in to the match.

Absolutely.

Anyone who had done any real firearms training for social work understands the shoot to stop concept. Again, death may occur, but as the shooter it's not what I am worried about. Shoot to stop.

Shoot to kill or shoot to wound or shoot the gun out of their hand is Hollywood movie silliness.

Center mass, be sure of your target, be sure of your backstop and shoot to stop.

semantics. Please stop with it. If you are pulling out your gun fuck backstops. Make sure you selected one that won't over-penetrate.

You're the fool that brought it up. You might want to carry a pellet gun then, real guns are designed to penetrate, even 9mm will blow through walls like tin foil.

I didn't bring up semantics....

You are living the armchair warrior life though.

I am absolutely done discussing further.

You either have nothing to lose or live uberly so don't have to worry.

sorry if I disagree with shooting to stop vs kill...however, I have commented on the topic directly from my own experience as well.

bjj, muay thai, wrestling, boxing, judo. Only martial arts worth doing IMO.

another vote for bjj, my bro goes there and says it's pretty brutal on your cardio. He's seen some people lose like 30lb in 3-6 months. But any martial art could be good, especially if you can actually spar/practice with a partner.

bjj is awesome cardio. especially if you work a lot on takedowns and do long, consecutive rolls.
