I'm thinking of taking up martial arts, mainly for self-defense, but also I've always wanted to since I was a kid. I'm now 24 yo, weigh 170lbs and am 5'11" (Not sure if the info matters).
I'm hoping that people can give me any suggestions as to which style would be best suited for self-defense possibly involving more than 1 person (I like kicking and punching though, so Aikido type styles doesn't really interest me). I've done some reading and so far it seems Krav Maga fits the bill pretty well.
Also, what should I look for from an instructor and what else should I know before signing with an instructor? Thanks for any help.

edit: Reason I haven't decided on Krav Maga is because the closest one is about 40min away.

Listen, Im going to tell you this for free. Save your money, martial arts dont mean sh!t when it comes down to a fight. What it comes down to is power, strength, and stamina. I took Tae Kwon Do for eight years when I was a bit younger. I am 22 now and I can tell you that martial arts wont do you any good when your 5'11 170lb frame is fighting someone bigger and stronger. Sorry bro. Buy some pepper spray.

You don't know what you are talking about.
Well maybe I'm wrong... maybe in your wise age of 22, you have figured out that thousands of years of martial arts have proved completely useless in unarmed combat.

I know from personal experience that size and power doesn't matter nearly as much as timing, speed, and skill.
Maybe your wisdom is just a byproduct of you not taking an effective martial art.

Kempo (or Kenpo) sounds like a good match for you. Lots of hitting (punches and kicks), most of the grappling focuses on escapes (how to get out of headlocks, grabs, etc.), and the combinations and take-downs are effective (and fun).

Sparring will probably be light and for points, but not too many people with real lives can fight full contact on a daily basis.

There seems to be a big misconception about the forms or kata; many people think they are completly useless. In reality they develop new skills, co-ordination, speed, power, and provide a surprisingly good cardio workout. They are really for conditioning, much like a boxer skips rope.

Rec.martial-arts has a good Newbie Guide that might help in selecting a school. They also have a large FAQ that will answer many questions about styles, etc.

I started about two and a half years ago at age 34, and it is one of the best things I have ever done for myself.

Good luck and have fun.

San Gabriel Valley.

hmm, mostly traditional schools martial arts (karate, judo, tae kwon do) around your area. See if there is real san shou school around there, since its large Chinese community.

McDojo will make you commit right away. Usually, good school will let you try out the school for the day. Ask if there is fee to move up in rank etc. I know my former school didn't

Too bad you don't live in Orange County, plenty of real good stand up schools or vale tudo down here.

San Shou seems a little too much of kick boxing for me.
The kenpo place I found does have a package for $35 that lets you take a couple of group and personal classes, which seems like a pretty good deal. I just hope it doesn't cost too much for their regular classes, since they're located in a more expensive area.

Hey! I want that teacher! That's the only way you learn.....through PAIN! I wonder what the turnover-rate is at his dojo. Seems those kids like his teaching style.

My S. Korean master told us he had his wrist broken by his master for slogging on his technique while as a student in a S. Korean dojo.

WTF is up with these Asian dojos? Ouch!

Vale Tudo is something I'm seriously itching to get into. No frills, no penasche, just nity gritty Brazillean street fighting.
