I do not smoke, but I found this outrageous. I just learned that MD recently increased the cigar tax from 15% to 70%, an almost quintouple increase! Probably in the long run this willl only hurt state revenues by people crossing state lines. This is one of the pimary tobacco producing states, yet they Tax tobacco, among other things, like there is no tomorrow. Marlboro cigarettes are not named for some place out West, they are named for Marlboro, MD.

It's easy money. People that don't use tobacco allow it to happen because it doesn't affect them. I'm gonna giggle like schoolgirl when they start taxing junk food, and the whining from the general population starts.

Yeah, Maryland is really screwed up.

They only have the highest per capita income of ANY state.

Way to fail, Maryland.

Wait, what was the question?

Maryland does suck. This is the first state I've been where a thunderstorm can threaten to knock out power in a major suburban area.

There aren't any local indians I'm aware of. You shouldn't have to resort to the grey/black market to get around egregious taxation.

Not enough of an increase.

Smokers cause all of our health insurance premiums to go up.

They should have raised it 700%

To be honest Maryland should raise it even higher than 700 percent since the people without health insurance are being subsidized to smoke.

By that logic, they should also be heavily taxed when they buy any form of processed or prepared food.

i fucking hope they do. i will giggle with you.

people don't understand the health issues they cause because of the shitty food they choose to eat. eating shitty food is fine, but you're gonna have to help out the government more when it comes to healthcare.

maryland, actually, fucking rules, which is why i'm moving there in may.

but he does have a point ... and pepco fucking sucks. i was out of power for 3 days few weeks ago, and one of my friends lost his power for about 10 days. ridiculous.

and this is in montgomery county, the richest county in the state.

EDIT:

but oh yea, i love living here. so much to do around here and we get all of the seasons.

EDIT 2:

oh but anything north of Columbia blows, especially baltimore. i despise baltimore, and i'm not a big fan of columbia either even though i work there. it is like you can see all the shops and stores from the roads, but the entrance to get there is hidden and behind everything. hate that shit.

In Vermont we had major problems when Hurricane Irene hit and some places were without power for a couple of weeks.

I thought the local power company did a good job considering they first had to rebuild missing roads and bridges before they could get the trucks to the problems.

I recently read a very good article on Maryland and the state is doing extremely well compared to the rest of the country. However, I have a friend who moved here to get away from Baltimore so I guess at least parts of it are not the best.

Processed or prepared does not necessarily mean unhealthy. I would be all for highly taxing unhealthy food though. The only way this country will ever even begin to fix it's problems with obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc. is through economic incentives to do so. If a Big Mac was considerably more expensive, people would stop eating them for every meal. The true cost of that meal is not paid at the drive through window.

Define 'unhealthy', is it the calorie content? The size of the item? Vitamin content? Its much easier to tax prepared or processed foods than it is 'unhealthy' foods.

We lost power for 5 days during the last major storm.

Not a big fan of the village centers that make up Columbia I take it?

Everyone will just buy them from another state. Problem solved.
Any Maryland resident that has more than 2 brain cells to rub together would buy them from Virginia.
But then again, most smokers are not known to have more than 2 brain cells.

All the Indians on the east coast were slaughtered or forced to walk thousands of miles to reservations on the west coast. Your move, smokers.
