Mass abduction at Baghdad factory
Gunmen have abducted at least 80 Iraqi factory workers from a fleet of buses just north of Baghdad, officials say.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5103358.stm
The abduction took place at a state-owned factory complex at Taji where dozens of insurgents commandeered buses taking employees home after work.

A source quoted by Reuters news agency said the number of those kidnapped was at least 100 and possibly many more.

It is the latest of a series of mass abductions of workers in Iraq, many of whom have been ransomed or killed.

The workers were taken from two factories - the Nasr and Hattin facilities - at the Taji industrial complex, police told the BBC.

The area is predominantly Sunni Arab, but most of the workers at the two factories were thought to be Shias, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Kamel Mohammed, an engineer working at the plant, told AP that he saw two of the plant's buses and a minivan intercepted by gunmen in three cars.

The factory vehicles transport workers back to Shia neighbourhoods of Baghdad, he said.

The gunmen also forced other workers leaving the plant in their own cars to get out and into the buses, he added.

The factories were reportedly used to manufacture armaments under Saddam Hussein, but have now been converted to make products for civilian use.

Taji also hosts a major military base, that was once used by Iraq's armed forces and is now home to US troops.
I bet those 80 or more people are just so glad that Zarqawi was killed and that the insurgency is in its last throes (as it's apparently been for the last 12 months). They can rest assured that 8,000 US troops will now be immediately deployed to seek them out and save them from barbaric deaths.

Or not.

Umm, I don't find it funny. You find several dozen people being abducted by terrorists funny? Mr. Rumsfelt did say that the insurgency was in it's last throes a while ago. Then why are we seeing no evidence of this? On the contrary, why are we seeing evidence of a LARGER insurgent presence than ever before, with said groups growing evermore daring?

Conjur is speaking truth. Don't be so narrowminded.

US troops should seek out US hostages, let the Iraqi army find it's own.
What Iraqi Army?

The one that ambushed our 3 soldiers and brutally killed them and boobytrapped the bodies. That's the one.

I was amazed to find out just yesterday that US troops can go NOWHERE in Iraq unless they travel with 3 armored humvees and 15 troops.
Apparently NOT ONE INCH of the country is safe for US troops.
The 3 abducted soldiers were in a 3 vehicle, 15 troop configuration but the Iraqis sprung a trap to separate them.
Apparently things are no better, and actually worse, than at any time since the US invasion.

Of course times are worse.

Remember three first three months was relativly calm.. greeted with flowers even by the Shi'a Arabs who were perfectly willing to embrace the "democracy" gambit for one reason: they knew that they constitute 60% of the population democracy would insure a transfer of power to them. But the Arab supremacist Sunnis will never ever reconcile themselves to the loss of political and economic power to the Shi'a, thus you have war that has been going on for 1300 years now. Both groups can't hold off any longer for thier genocidal ways to come out and are acting on it.

Now we just do less patrols to keep our death toll down and let Iraq desend into chaos.

It only takes a couple of knuckleheads with guns to carry out an abduction...if anything, these recent waves of violence are an act of desperation by Zarquawi loyalists to prove they are still relevant.

There is another thread out there that mentions Al Quaida's intent to target all Iraqis in their war against the Americans...this will only further isolate Al Quaida factions from the rest of the insurgency, and Iraqis in general

This doesnt make things any better for those killed by these insurgents, but such actions do very little to further their cause, and if anything only serve as a further indication of their limited ability to successfully engage military forces.

I find it to be incovievable that Conjur would be making fun of our military for going all out to find 2 kidnapped american soldiers.
Then to make fun of our troops is just unamerican
I have read many many of Conjur`s posts.
I for one will also state that his making fun of such a serious issue as in the kidnapping of 80 people is just beyond reason.

Political comments aside people like Conjur thrive on the negativity of an issue to lambaste our great country.

You truly are a work in progress Conjur.
