I'm not sure about Steam activation. I know when it was new (HL2 release) you could enter your CD Keys into Steam and it'd add them, I don't use it very often at all now so I'm unsure.

You can't put the retail one on Steam though.

Interestingly enough, the non-Steam EA DD DRM is less stringent in this case (no Steam client required, only restriction is you can't activate on >5 machines in 24 hours).

Probably not. Although you will miss out on a few bonuses related to importing a Mass Effect 1 character (a few bonus levels, extra paragon/renegade points, etc). You may also miss a few character interactions that are based upon ME1 choices. Should not really be a huge deal. At least you will be set up for ME3.

Not really, but the way they do it is by having the game pretend you either killed or didn't meet a lot of the carryover people from ME1. So you might as well spend another $20 and play the original first.

awesome find. i have been wanting this game but have not wanted to drop 50 for it. i wish it was on steam, but for 20 bucks off i will be fine with a retail copy.

No, but:

1) The first game is fantastic and adds a lot of significance to the second game.
2) The first game is really cheap these days, and its a bargain.
3) There is a save game import feature from ME1 to ME2, that affects a dozen or so MAJOR MAJOR plot points, and a few hundred minor/trivial points in the second game. This is used to brilliant emotional and narrative enhancement. Having your ME1 decisions affect ME2 adds a lot of charm to the experience, so I'd recommend a playthrough of 1 to get the full appreciation of 2.

when you get to see how your decisions from 1 carry over to 2, it'll make you want to replay 1, just so you can replay 2 with a different universe. At least I do, and I've played ME1 through several times.
