I had no idea this game was close to being out. I thought this was a 2018-2019 title....
Vega seriously? Seriously AMD?
At least it looks like Vega will run this game at ~45 FPS which is good enough for freesync (4k...)

Having a 1080Ti for 4K Mass Effect Andromeda must be great.

any tests bellow 1080P very high?
because the game is looking very heavy, while there is a Xbox one version...

their last game DAI scaled well to lower end hardware at least.

Huh?

Can you please enlighten us? How can you "see/spot tessellation" without wireframe?

Yeah good uses of tessellation you should be able to notice without wireframe. People should be rounder (and not in the ME:A chubby way ) and sharp edges and such should be removed for a small performance hit.

https://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/09/12/deus_ex_human_revolution_gameplay_performance_review/11

And ironically, it was noticeable in that game and had almost no actual performance hit with less than 2 fps difference in both (very old now) gpus

Using tessellation with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 reduced framerates by only about 3.0%.

The AMD Radeon HD 6970 experienced a performance reduction of only 2.0% when enabling tessellation.

Therefore, it seems Tessellation takes no major draw on performance between on or off in this game on either video card, this is good news.

I need Vega to play games Bacon1....
That's why lol.
4k or nothing from here on out.

I had no idea this game was this close. I actually can just kick back and watch someone play this game. I enjoy it.

Reference 480 that throttles at stock settings?

Welp disable that overdone tessellation and right back to tied... amazing :O

Nvidia performance also goes up to with disabled tessellation. The 480 just happens to be slower in this game, end of story.

When did Nvidia add tessellation modifier to their drivers? There isn't an in game option that I've seen.

It's already been pointed out that there is zero quality difference in this game between tessellation off and tessellation on high. So, again, Nvidia gains performance when tessellation is turned off. Once again, no matter how you try to slice it, the GTX 1060 6gb is noticeably is faster apples-to-apples in this game.

And you completely ignored my question.

How do you disable tessellation on a Nvidia GPU?

Read a few early impressions for this game (guess it's out on Early Access or something?) And you'd think the audience were bipolar.

I'm a pass on ME:A until it hits the bargain bin. Bioware has become a husk of a once glorious studio.

The tessellation level is likely tied to the terrain and mesh quality settings.

I doubt how much further they can optimize a DX11 title, going by how the 378.78 version turned out.

The point is, that for comparisons between GPUs when it comes to newly released titles, you should always use the ones that have the launch day drivers. It may or may not have an impact, but at least it removes a variable so no one can say the game isn't performing optimally due to drivers.

Tessellation is easy to spot, especially when you do comparisons as you'll see the effects of the increased triangle count as objects and entities having smoother and more realistic geometry, especially when combined with displacement mapping.

That is a fair point.

Anyhow, PCGH would do a retest on launch day with more GPUs(they do it all the time) and a better picture will emerge.

That entirely depends on the implementation. It doesn't seem to be the case in this game at the moment.

Well the game isn't released yet. I'll wait for the final version to come to a conclusion. But generally speaking, Frostbite 3 games always have good support for tessellation.

Well, there it is. The first game my laptop won't be able to run at medium. Guess I'm gonna have to run as X1 settings (low).

How is this game heavy? A 1070 at 1080p easily cracks 60/60 average/minimum and 16GB of RAM is par for the course in 2017. Heavy how? AMD falling down again Day 1 again is nothing new.

  1. This isn't technically day 1, it's day -5.
  2. Both the GTX 1060 6GB and RX 480 8GB - fail to hold 60fps at 1080p maxed out settings. Are you implying that GTX 1070 is now mainstream?
  3. Overdone tessellation that makes zero difference in image quality but has a performance penalty
  4. BioWare still has issues with Frostbite 3. Same thing happened with the launch of Inquisition.

1060/480 level is low end, 1070 is middish, 1080 is nearly high, 1080 Ti is beyond high. Anything below 1060 is a waste of time. Pretty simple. And it ain't Day 1 with a fat Day 1 patch and everything ready to gold. Not exactly.

The day 1 patch is reputedly supposed to be a whopping 10GB! If there are issues with tessellation, they will likely be solved by the patch.

I wonder if it's possible that the reason we don't see any noticeable tessellation is because they haven't added in the displacement maps yet? Without displacement maps, tessellation wouldn't really be noticeable I think.

This discussion has been done to death. You want to make up your own pricing and performance tiers? Fine. Whatever floats your boat.
