Mass Effect - Stuck, need help

Edit: Fixed my own problem. I got impatient and quick-loaded, repeated a whole lot of dialog and shit and did the scene again. Game managed to unfuck itself the second time around.
------------

I'm finally getting around to playing Mass Effect, but I'm stuck near the beginning of the game. I have just recently gotten on to the Citadel. I have been looking for Garrus, and entered the Med Clinic. There was a shoot out, and now I'm supposed to talk to Garrus or the doctor, but they're both crouched as if they're still in combat, and they aren't available to talk to. I can't leave the med clinic, because the door is unavailable until after I talk to them.

Has anyone experienced this before? It's kind of annoying to finally get around to playing this game that everyone raves about, just to be stopped in my tracks by a game-breaking bug. I haven't saved in quite a while so it will be annoying to go back and repeat things.

Good reason to save frequently (using different slots).
And no, I have never experienced that particular bug. Weird.

I just played ME on the xbox, and there's a lot of random glitches where characters get stuck in walls, your team doesn't follow you like they should, and various glitches like you mentioned.

I haven't had anything game breaking, but I have had to save often. I could name a few times where I made 45 minutes of progress only to be killed in 2 seconds in an ambush and I'd have to start over.

Excuse my intrusion but is there any way to fix the floaty/spongy FPS feel? The mouselook doesn't have the same feel to it as a normal FPS and it actually put me off playing it any further. I picked up a different game to play in the meantime.

It's not an FPS...

Bingo. Its a role-playing game dumbed down for the standard console player who doesnt actually want a real RPG.
Just play it like KOTOR and dont get too excited or pissed off at the shooting. Its not a shooter. Although the half-assed effort put into the combat system makes me think they should have just made it a regular shooter.

I just finished it last night on xbox. man, the frame drops and the god damn radial selection is so horrible. I still enjoyed it and it was a "relaxing" ARPG, but ugghh, all the stuttering. I hesitated on the $5 steam sale, and then forgot about it. doh!

But yeah, all kinds of glitches. I landed my Mako on top of a bunker, jumped out, looked at the entrance, got in, finished the mission, then couldn't get close enough to the Mako to jump back in. Had to do it all over again. Another is one of my party members got stuck at the door switch, couldn't get out of the spot and I couldn't open the door!

still entertaining game though

I don't like how when I stop running shepard takes another half-step forward after I feel that I've stopped moving. The keyboard controls feel floaty to me, the mouse seems fine, but the vignetting is atrocious. I'm hoping the sequel throws that out, because seriously, how much assistance do you need to focus on your own character in the MIDDLE of the screen at all times? I think the sequel has it also though, judging by the videos though I'm not sure.

That annoyed me to no end too. Luckily with the third person over-the-shoulder view I found it to be forgivable. If it was strictly first-person perspective, it would be gaming breaking for me.

Another thing that drove me nuts is the way they executed running and turns. If I ran in one direction, then made a sharp turn and spun around, my character would do some weird twirly spin. Every time he does it, I felt like I was supposed to have an analog joystick under my thumb, not WASD.

It may not be an FPS but heck, I could list a few cross-platform games which are in a similar mould but do not have the awful feel that ME does.

Eh, it's not a FPS shooter, it's a TPS RPG. I think the controls are totally forgivable - mostly because I have no problem with the way the game controls. But in any case, it isn't a twitch shooter, so it really doesn't matter. I've only just started playing this game, and already the story is gripping, and the gun play is just starting to get exciting.

Loved the game but found the controls left a lot to be desired. But man, I really loved that game.

I'm getting bored of the side quests - I don't understand - I drive around some shitty planet, kill like 5 guys, check my journal and for some reason I've discovered something and completed the mission. The main quest is fun, but these boring side planet quests are extremely dull so far.

There are some decent side quests, but randomly roaming planets for missions sucked. However, after you get decently powered up, you'll look forward to some of those planet missions where you walk into a room faced with a dozen baddies, nonchalantly wave at half of them and send them spinning towards the ceiling, then take on the others. it feels pretty badass.

For side quests, visit the Mass Effect Wikia page (http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Mass_Effect_Wiki) and each time you land on a planet just check where exactly you need to drive. Seriously, it speeds the side missions A LOT, you don't wander on the surface for no reason and know exactly where to go. The what to do isn't particularly hard - usually shoot everything or select the charm/intimidate replies.

But the wikia took away most of the boredom of the side missions - takes like 10 minutes tops on each world now.

I'm in the middle of playing through this now, does skipping the side quests hurt you in terms of not being a high enough level for the main story? Will it be too hard down the line if you skip all the unneeded stuff?

No, the game is easy the whole time. You don't really need to farm XP or do those side missions, unless you want to hit 60 on 2nd playthrough.

The only "worthwhile" side missions are both DLCs
(first one is fun and you get a Colossus armor in the end)
and the other DLC
as you get access to a shop where you can buy everything (with a bit of luck and a few reloads )
. The other missions are pretty much the same - land, find, kill/talk, leave. The mission on the Moon is cool too
(you get your class expanded)
.

Yeah I just did the Moon quest and got the reward you mentioned without knowing I was going to get it. It was a nice surprise!

If I have already patched Mass Effect vanilla to the newest patch and THEN install bring down the sky, will that mess my patch up? I believe BDTS uses an older patch. Thanks.
