Do you really believe a young man working towards a PhD in Neuroscience could not pass a mental health check? Obviously, there is no way a background check would do anything to prevent this because he had no record and was a college graduate from Cal-Riverside with the highest honors.
Again, the guns aren't the problem. We need to do some serious research into why people have been doing this for decades. This goes back at least to the University of Texas belltower shooting, so it is not a new phenomena, but it is happening more often now for some reason and THAT is what people should focus on.
The point is that our mental health check is not waterproof. some crazies get through. At that point, the only option is decreasing overall availability of guns, make it so difficult that they go by another less deadly route.
I value public safety over the rights of some dumb shit gun fetishist.
