no more concerts for me. nothing where a large group of people is gathered in an open space. it is not worth it.

Yea, a co-worker echoed that same thought today. in this particular situation the nearby hotel provided this asshole with the perfect spot to inflict the most possible carnage. I would still go to an event where this isn't the case+proper security screening prevents anyone from bringing in a gun or bomb.

I'd wager you are still far more likely to get struck and killed by lightning or drown in your bathtub. So... no more going outside or bathing either.

I now wonder if it would have helped if those onstage could have grabbed a mike and told everyone to GTFO ASAP. Surely that would have meant more harm by the hysteria of that many fleeing at once but after watching a few vids taken from the crowd it seems many thought it was "firecrackers" and it took some amount of time before it fully sunk in that it was a shooter.

Did not realize there were so many fatalities. I thought it was 8 dead. So I was surprised when I heard one source say it was the deadliest mass shooting in history.

I did hear a rumor the guy was a recent convert to Islam.

While I admire his stones, dude was shooting a full auto so if the gunman had seen him and decided to take him up on his offer a bunch of people around him would have gotten shot too.

i read that the guy in the plaid shirt and black hat ended up getting shot in the stomach area later on

I think ISIS has already tried to claim so level of responsibility but I'd wager they just want their name mentioned on CNN.

That's not a rumor, this was information provided by his brother to law enforcement.

No, ABC news just said that his brother has told the police that he was a multi-millionaire. He made his $$ from real estate and on the stock market, he owned his own plane and was a licensed pilot. None of this makes sense.
EDIT: he was also apparently a "high roller" at Vegas casino's and was an expert gambler. Police have found additional weapons at his home, like 18 more different rifles and pistols. The automatic rounds were of the "Talon" type, nasty, nasty stuff.

I highly doubt what you say about the ammunition. If he was shooting with a rifle, those rounds are typically simple copper encased lead and there's nothing special about them. Hollow point ammunition is essentially unavailable and unnecessary for rifle rounds which are already traveling at extremely high rates of speed.

FYI "talon" style ammunition basically just means hollow points that tumble. Winchester originally came out with the "Black Talon" ammunition and then it got a ton of bad press since a few cops were killed using it. They stopped manufacturing it as black talon and now it's simply the Winchester "Ranger" ammunition. They essentially are exactly the same.

OK, my bad, they were mentioning something about the type of ammo used in the automatic, I'm sure we'll get the details as days go by.

Gee, since he killed himself before the police broke into his room we'll never know that answer. Apparently he was pretty good at gambling, $$$ loss had zero to do with this tragic event.

I do not shoot guns but it looks like a decent distance from hotel room window to the killing fields. How good of a shot do you have to be to cause that many hits with a semi-auto rifle in that short a time?

Wiki says on average about 50 people a year die from lightning strikes so I think that gunshots are winning.

How does someone get an virtual arsenal of automatic weapons to the 30th floor of a major casino without anyone noticing?!?

Is the Mandalay Bay security really THAT bad? I thought that these places were completely covered with cameras.

If they stopped reporting these there would be a lot fewer of them, these people do it for the 15 minutes of fame.
If everyone in the crowd had a gun, there would be a lot fewer dead, I am sure. Someone would have fired back. People without guns are too vulnerable.
An armed man is a citizen, and unarmed man is a subject.
There is a county in Georgia where gun ownership is mandated and the crime rate there is very low indeed.
KENNESAW, Ga - Several Kennesaw officials attribute a drop in crime in the city over the past two decades to a law that requires residents to have a gun in the house.
In 1982, the Kennesaw City Council unanimously passed a law requiring heads of households to own at least one firearm with ammunition.
The ordinance states the gun law is needed to "protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants."
Then-councilman J.O. Stephenson said after the ordinance was passed, everyone "went crazy."
"People all over the country said there would be shootings in the street and violence in homes," he said. "Of course, that wasn't the case."
In fact, according to Stephenson, it caused the crime rate in the city to plunge.
Kennesaw Historical Society president Robert Jones said following the law's passage, the crime rate dropped 89 percent in the city, compared to the modest 10 percent drop statewide.
"It did drop after it was passed," he said. "After it initially dropped, it has stayed at the same low level for the past 16 years."
