Just heard on NBC NY- if true, that would be three 8.0+ monsters in 8 yrs. 2004 (also in Indonesia), last yr in Japan, and now this. So far heard nothing else.
Indonesia issued a tsunami warning Wednesday after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.9 hit waters off westernmost Aceh province.
People on Twitter said tremors were felt in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and India. High-rise apartments and offices on Malaysia's west coast shook for at least a minute.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful quake was centered 20 miles (33 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor around 308 miles (495 kilometers) from Aceh's provincial capital.
Said, an official at Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency who goes by only one name, said a tsunami warning has been issued.
Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.
A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on Dec. 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, nearly three quarter of them in Aceh.
You think they would put up a coastal wall after that last tsunami.
And it'd effectively have to be a dam, not just a wall. When a tsunami arrives, it's as if the ocean level has suddenly risen by X number of feet. It's not just a little wave and then it's done. It just keeps on coming until it's damn good and ready to leave.not sure if serious???
How big of a wall should they put up? it would suck if they built it to withstand 50' high wave but a wave is 60' high? should every populated coastal area in the Pacific rim build this wall?
EVALUATION
A SIGNIFICANT TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED BY THIS EARTHQUAKE.
HOWEVER...SEA LEVEL READINGS NOW INDICATE THAT THE THREAT HAS
DIMINISHED OR IS OVER FOR MOST AREAS. THEREFORE THE TSUNAMI
WATCH ISSUED BY THIS CENTER IS NOW CANCELLED.
8.0+ earthquakes happen every year. Hell, 2007 had 4 of them alone.if true, that would be three 8.0+ monsters in 8 yrs.
