WASHINGTON – Thousands of people, many holding signs with names of gun violence victims and messages such as "Ban Assault Weapons Now," joined a rally for gun control Saturday, marching from the Capitol to the Washington Monument.

Leading the crowd were marchers with "We Are Sandy Hook" signs, paying tribute to victims of the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Washington Mayor Vincent Gray and other city officials marched alongside them. The crowd stretched for at least two blocks along Constitution Avenue.

Participants held signs reading "Gun Control Now," "Stop NRA" and "What Would Jesus Pack?" among other messages. Other signs were simple, with the names of victims of gun violence.

About 100 residents from Newtown, where a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six adults, traveled to Washington together, organizers said.

Just amazing, so many turned out in support of proper gun control, turned out in support of ending needless gun violence. So much bigger than the gun crazed protesters the other week. Law makers need to see, the people support greater restrictions on gun ownership and possession.

Edit: Fine I changed countless back to thousands.

I see a crowd that's about 80% female, 90% of whom have probably never held or used a firearm in their life, 100% of whom can't understand the simple statistics behind why an assault weapons ban is ineffective legislation.

So much bigger than the gun crazed protesters the other week.
A few thousand people in one city is bigger than tens of thousands across every state capital in all 50 states? ^_^

Law makers need to see, the people support greater restrictions on gun ownership and possession.
Republican House members in red states aren't going to commit political suicide by voting for an AWB. Hell, even several Democrats in the Senate are skeptical about it, including the Majority Leader.

Isn't it great how so many self-righteous assholes take a great tragedy and turn those involved into martyrs for their own cause?

We should celebrate them. We should have "Sandy Hook Day"...we can all dress up like 5 year olds with bullet holes in them and celebrate how their wonderful sacrifice has now made us all more susceptable to gun violence because we banned law-abiding citizens from having those scary, nasty, evil guns.

Seriously, don't you realize that an object has no morality, no compulsion? The object itself is completely neutral. It is nothing but a tool.

Should we ban hammers because I can use one to bash your face in? Should we ban golf clubs because I could use one to knock your testicles off? Should we ban water because I could hold your head under it and drown you?

I mean, without a hammer, you'd still have a face. Without a golf club, you'd still have testicles. Without water, you'd still be alive. Right? So, by the logic espoused by gun control fanatics, the hammer, the golf club, and the water must be evil. If guns are evil because they can injure, so to must be everything else. Scope and scale are irrelevant. I could get 50lbs of commercial explosive and do much more damage than an AR-15 with a 30 round magazine. Should we ban commercial explosives too? Hell, I could probably accomlish that with a 5lb over the counter propane tank! Maybe we should ban barbecues!

Here's the idiocy of it all: maybe we should just outlaw criminals. I mean, they're the ones who are making all these bad things happen. Why not just outlaw them?

2 blocks? This is hardly even newsworthy, let alone something on the scale of the pro-gun protests a week earlier.

Any intelligent politician on the Democratic side should know at this point that gun control isn't a good hill to die on.......which is why feinsteins bill will never pass.

They should march on Chicago to end gun violence.

We have a great talk radio guy on WGN radio here in Chicago (non-political news radio) who is very good at telling things as they are - Friday he just goes off, saying we all know by next Monday there will be another 5 deaths from gun violence in Chicago over the weekend, each shooting will be made with a handgun, not an assault rifle, obtained through illegal means, all these gun control laws being proposed will do absolutely nothing to reduce these gun deaths in the city.

As to the protest in D.C., I wish people had the decency to wait until they actually had a million group members before identifying themselves as a million people... and the decency not to link their group to the civil rights fight when it is not even remotely similar... and if you are going to draw the comparisons to the Million Man March at least have the decency to have a token black person in your group...

Even more good news, with Senator Harkin no running again in Iowa the odds are even better for a Republican take over in 2014.

Harkin's decision eases the burden on the GOP, who have to gain six seats to win the majority in the Senate. The president's party historically loses seats in the midterm elections after his re-election. Obama, a Democrat, was re-elected last year.

What does this have to do with the news of the thread?

A lot of things are meant for competing viewpoints, good for two parties to duke it out over - but not these gun legislations that accomplish nothing productive. If Democrats are dead-set on doing something just for the sake of proving how much they care, they and get Supreme Court backing, that's the end. Once a government is granted a right, the government extremely rarely relinquishes that right. We need Democrats to oppose these gun legislations some are proposing.

Gun control is the stupidest thing for Obama to spend what little political capital he has, and to my dismay it seems like he's willing to do it.

Harry Reid needs to visit the whitehouse with Wyden and all the other moderate Democrats that believe in the 2nd amendment and have an intervention.

I cannot wait the day until Obama finally does will Bill should have done. Abolish the NRA and remove all firearms from civilians.

Good thing the founders left executive privileged or Obama would be up against the 2nd Amendment. Otherwise we'd be stuck with a bunch of dumb white folks with think they're soldiers.

And while he's at it get rid of the 1st,4th and 5th amendment which always get in the way of justice for the criminals, if you are not doing anything wrong you have nothing to fear.:whiste:

Who is being self righteous again? Them or you for doing the exact same thing? We get it, you don't like their views and they don't like your views but to pretend you are above taking advantage of a tradedy is bullshit and I've got NRA commercials and YouTube videos all to back that up.

Yeah, Democrats who have passed serious gun control have historically lost their majorities shortly after. Happened after the original ban, and has happened more often than not on the state level as well. Given the slim majority in the Senate, they won't want to be repeating that again.

There are much bigger fish to fry on horizon, they can't afford to lose their one majority.

why can't you hold a ballot and vote on it like a democracy?
majority of states + majority of votes = yes ban, otherwise it fails and everybody just shuts up for a few years.

My homestate (where I no longer reside) of Nebraska is a great representation of the nation overall in one way:

http://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/Omaha-looks-to-combat-its-homicide-problem-4209010.php

Nebraska had a record 51 murders last year, but 80% of them were in North Omaha which is very very "diverse" let's say.

So does it make sense for Nebraska to go way out into it's western, rural areas and tell these far less "diverse" farmers and people living in smaller rural communities that they need to change their way of life and not have access to certain weapons or magazines, etc... because of the celebration of diversity going on in North Omaha?

What sense does that make? Zero.

On a national level, Chicago is the US's North Omaha and it makes exactly as much sense to tell everyone else they need to have more restrictions on them because of gun violence, the VAST majority of which, is taking place in communities that don't follow the law anyway... and have nothing in common with the people who will end up obeying said law.

Yes but they would FEEL better if we did SOMETHING. Doesn't matter if it would be effective, or constitutional. They saw pictures of little kids who died, they cried, and now society needs to take away some rights so they feel better. Don't you get that? You heartless fiend?

Fact is, this appeasement of female emotion has gone on since time immemorial, a great example being the incredible failure known as prohibition. Largely driven by womens' groups, it lead to far more problems than it solved. It was an affront to personal liberty.

I say this as someone who identified as a male feminist until less than a year ago. Someone who was raised by a feminist woman. I can absolutely acknowledge the inborn failings of my own gender, like too much aggression and violence, but I'm also prepared to acknowledge the failings of the other gender. That's a very dangerous thing to do today, but the fact is... women are too emotional. Which is okay... as long as it's ignored, particularly by society and those in power. Once it can take the reigns of civilization, then it's problematic.

I also say this as someone who has never drank alcohol or owned a gun. And as someone who in 2008 started out as a die hard Hilary supporter, very excited about the idea of our first female president, before I switched to even more die-hard Obama supporter very excited about our first black president. It's amazing how many things about your views can change rapidly when you pluck your head out of your own ass.

Here's a great video from a really stellar YouTube person, a female non-feminist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqEeCCuFFO8

I changed it because I felt thousands was an under estimate.
Wow, now this is fucking dishonest. I am not sure I've even seen this before on Anandtech. You posted an article, quoted it, and yet changed these words in it from

WASHINGTON – Thousands of people, many holding signs

to

WASHINGTON – Countless people, many holding signs

and you did this because you "felt" thousands was an under estimate.

This is a massive misrepresentation and I know for sure people on AT have been banned for subtly changing the quotes of others without it being obvious.

Congratulations on cratering your own argument by resorting to such desperate idiocy.

They should interview some of these people to see if they even know what an assault weapon is.

Most people are utterly clueless when it comes to guns. It's staggering how anybody can believe one needs months of military training to fire an AR when it is something anyone can learn in under five minutes. Even an iPad is harder to use in comparison.

1. Because we're not a Democracy, we're a Republic.

2. The Constitution recognizes that we have a Right to be armed.
