Exactly what part of master and slave refers to the white man? And why would using a different designation denigrate anyone? On a different note, why exactly is the secondary drive called a slave? I just do not see the connection.

The secondary drive is called the slave because it is completely subordinate to the master drive. If both drives are sending data along the IDE chain at the same time, the master drive will have superiority over the slave drive. According to the dictionary, a slave is a "being/device which is subordinate to a master." So the designation of the secondary drive as "slave" is perfectly correct.

There is no reason to change it for the simple reason this is just seen as offensive by a small minority...

However in this F'd up country we see that the vocal minority is more and more dictating to the majority how we are to live our lives.....

Look at how one aetheist at a school is offended by god in the pledge of allegiance so they try to toss it out of our schools....Not just there but if they have their way any reference to god on our money and what not will be removed....have they looked in the mirror and seen what they represent??? The percentage of ppl who believe in god whether christian or not is an overwhelming majority yet they continue to take away things from us cause they deem as offensive.....

We in america need to look at each of these often trivial..."oh NO BIGGIE (duh! lets change it"... as being just one more step in eroding our rights....

Ronn needs to pull his head out and see the big picture and see this world as a hyper sensitive PC culture that is starting to intrude into all of lives in a detrimental way....

"Sandoval said that he had already rejected a suggestion that the county stop buying all equipment carrying the "master" and "slave" labels and had no intention of enforcing a ban on such terms with suppliers. "

There is no talk of a law suit. He seems to be saying that he is responding to the sensitivities of some of his 90,000 employees. Motherboard or mainboard (as Gigabyte labelled one of my boards), master or primary - is not a big deal. There are many instances where similar parts have different names. Most techs would deal with it. Besides no new ground would be broken - many common terms have been previously changed. As previously stated all politicians or media types that want to keep their job are very carefull about language and accidently being misinterpreted as demeaning some group or other. Ask Rush about that. Most of this stuff is probably built and designed in plants where english is not the language commonly used.

Sorry I did not wish to overly offend (except Tony Blair that is), just demonstrate that unthinking stereotypes can be unhelpful at times.

jdurg thanks for the info

Umm, as mentioned in this thread: Master Slave does not equal Primary Secondary. Primary Secondary is silk-screend on nearly all motherboard IDE ports (Not just Gigabyte) because a modern IDE controller has two "channels," a primary and a secondary. Each channel can support a Master Slave drive combination because the connector supports two devices per cable. Therefore, you can not change the Master Slave designation to anything remotely resembling Primary Secondary.

I've read the word's black and white so many times in this thread. Why does it have to be a black and white issue? Were black people the only race that have been enslaved in the past?

RE:"Why does it have to be a black and white issue? Were black people the only race that have been enslaved in the past?"

No they were not. And certainly not all blacks were enslaved.

Shouldn't have anything to do with it but there are certain groups and individuals in this country who have made political careers and monetary gains based on the division of people.

In politics it's "divide and conquer". That mean pitting one group against the other. In this case it seems too many people have too much time on their hands.

Totally agree, this is a small issue, not some big conspiracy of unnamed liberals to rule the world.

2 names come to mind for me that have made careers and fortunes for their foundations off of stuff like this....

Rev. Jesse Jackson & Rev. Al Sharpton

Without Racism and "the black card" or "race card" no one would listen to them and give them the power they crave....

BUt you are right it is definitely not always a black and white thing but when an american in the uSA is offended by the word master and slave you damn well better be sure it is a Black and White issue....

Now for another day we can discuss how the native americans want to remove all references to indians in sports name and thousands of road, creeks, rivers, mountains, etc with the word Squaw in them.....

This is absolutely ludicrous and frivolous... The PC movement continues to amaze me.

Anyways, I wonder how many living ex-slaves these people are actually representing when they feel "offended" over this terminology? None, the last living ex-slave died several decades ago.

No but this forum is mostly american and the story linked to took place in america. I think that everyone will agree that when you try to think of two races related to the words "master" and "slave" that are relevant to americans, they would be black and white.

No they wont change the name just make it manditory that the male connectors be able to connect to other male connectors and same with the female connectors connecting to other female connectors. That way the evil system isn't anti-homosexual .
