Well, if they just update the graphics and don't screw with the gameplay / mechanics, they'll be alright. I'd pay $20-$30 for a good remake that put food on some artists' tables.

If they try to make it "better" they'll probably fail miserably. That seems to be the problem with 4x games in general.

Please don't be a MMO piece of turd like WoT, that would actually rank it below III in my books. Going the MMO route would ruin it for me.

Oh god... they're going to make it some awful hybrid of those old semi-mmo browser empire games and Clash of Clans. D:

When one of the four proclaimed "enhancements" is

new voiceover by "well-known actors,"

...you can kindly kiss my ass.

This has "casual P2W browser game" written all over it.

I hope I'm wrong. I'm, sadly, afraid I'm not.

I hope I am wrong but everyone above has covered my expected fears for this game quote well.

history of developer - not suitable to 4x gaming
directions - not seeming like that much of a improvement to be worth paying for
cost - definitely going to be new game cost, so way over priced for a "paint job"

as to the game trailer, looks like they are going to take the path sword of the stars did for combat (IIRC that game well enough).

Personally I would perfer a #2 remake. 3 over promised and under delivered.

the phrase of bringing it into this generation definitely feels like browser / mobile delivery format. Probably something similar to Sid's star ships.

cautiously optimistic. They'd have to do a better job than stardock, although just some new sprites and keeping the mechanics the same would be a good start for a "remake".

I have no expectations on this. The history of the developer is that they don't listen to outside opinion and have a horrible alpha/beta making sweeping changes without balance. Nope, I have no hope for this.

No prior wargaming 4x titles so I'm willing to give them one chance. If they fuck it up at least we still have gal civ.

It would be bad enough if Wargaming was making it but the developer is a mobile dev Wargaming is just the producer.

Wargaming also made the Massive Assault series before WoT, never played it though.

I also just found out that they bought out Gas Powered Games (Supreme Commander) and own the Total Annihilation IP. That could be interesting.

I will give them a chance.

The dev that tackled Alien:Isolation had never done a survival horror before, and they put out the best survival horror ive ever played. So its possible without prior experience that the game may be good.

Maybe they're opting for a higher focus on a story-driven (voiced) campaign. If that's the case the voice acting quality will play an important role. There's definitely going to be a mode where you only fight other players and/or A.I., in which voice acting will probably be almost irrelevant, who knows, time will tell.

If thats the case they already fucked it up.

This. Exactly.

Master of Orion has been a revered name in this genre since it began, and that's despite the fact that the last quality sequel came out 20 years ago!

That ain't because of masterful storytelling and Shakespearean voice talent.

Choosing to focus on that, if that indeed is the case, is a terrible decision on any level.
Hopefully it's simply a foolish marketing decision and doesn't reflect the focus of the game, but it puts a bad taste in my mouth either way.

The fact is, no matter how good the game is, the voice acting is something that will be criticized by the review media if it is not top quality. And I have to admit that part of Civ 4's appeal is the outstanding (if somewhat corny) voice acting by Leonard Nimoy. It is probably one of the few games that I didn't turn off voice acting after my first play through. I sometimes still listen to him read a few of the technology advancements.

Voice acting in a strategy game is a pretty minor thing unless it's really terrible. That said, the fact that they hired one Indian voice actor to do all the tech quotes in Beyond Earth hurt it, because there was no audio clue as to which character she was supposed to be reading. Russian, American, Chinese, African - they all sounded the same.

"We didn't screw up the voice acting" is about as much as a bullet point as you can make this, so it seems like a definite marketing mis-step.
