I picked up the early access on Steam last week. Played two games on it spending about 10 hours total so far.

Feels like a graphically updated version version of MOO2. Basic game play is similar, races are familiar, tactical combat supported, ship designer there, and the technology tiers are the same as well.

The races have minor bonuses that don't seem to have a large impact as MOO2. But in the old game some of the traits are game breaking so it's not that bad of a change. Diplomacy is pretty limited. You can have trade agreements, non-agression pacts and trade tech. AI gets angry with you for having a large empire and there doesn't seem to be a way to make them happy after that. Would like the diplomacy options to be more fleshed out.

Combat can be simulated or tactical. Tactical combat is not turn based. Instead you can pause combat and issue commands as needed. Currently feels a little clunky when selecting ships and issuing orders. Abilities like, black hole or subspace teleporter can be manually activated. Missile boats and kiting enemy ships seem stupidly over powered. In the end though, brute force wins out over tactics.

There is a standard tech tree which anyone can research but on some techs you will need to make a decision over one or another. Such as you can only pick reinforced armor or reinforced hull. You will not be able to get all the technologies so you will need to plan for what you need and trade for the rest.

Ship designing is there as well. You can select how to load out each class of ship that you want from weapons, armor, shields, special equipment. You have the ability to specialize ships into missile boats, gun ships, carriers and planet destroyers. Interface could be better though and right now the only way to upgrade ships is to spend money while in MOO2 you could have a planet refit each ship in the production queue.

Over all the early access game is playable and and fun. They still need to implement spying, fleshing out the ship designer, some of the other races, and other game victory conditions. There are some bugs as it is an early access but I haven't run into anything game breaking.

In short, if you liked MOO2, you will probably like the New MOO. If you pick up the early release it also comes with MOO1, MOO2 and MOO3 and an extra race on the standard release.

^^^ Thanks for the review... it gives me hope. When it comes WAY down in price on a Steam sale, I'll probably jump on it.

I'd have gotten more excited if MOO3 hadn't destroyed the franchise...

While I'm glad to hear that it is shaping up as a worthy successor to the great MOO2, I am dismayed that they are going with preorder exclusives.

They aren't preorder exclusives as you can buy the first three games dirt cheap on GOG. The rest of it is common fair which isn't even available yet. I see their inclusions as "you're buying our half completed game so here's some stuff that you can play while your frustrated." I would be more on your side had this been a $60 release. It is early access after all.

At least their aren't pushing a "Season Pass". Every time I see a game ship with a Season Pass, I automatically go defensive. Screw season passes. They might be a good deal if the game is good, but by the time you know if the DLC is any good the price goes up. Look at Fallout 4...the Season Pass is going from $30 to $50. I rather buy the DLC piecemeal. I might pay more per DLC in the long run, but at least I can completely skip the crappy ones. Sorry that was a side tangent but I needed to get it off my chest.

It is not the other MOO games that concern me, I know that I can get them on GOG or probably steam now, but the 'extra race on the standard release' that worries me. It feels like the start of the microtransaction treadmill. Something that the company that makes this is famous for.

I would not be concerned about the extra race. The additional race are basically evil humans. While the regular human faction is happy blue, the Khanate (evil humans) are emo red. And since the race bonuses are pretty minimal to begin with, all this amounts to is some flavor text and different skins for early adopters.

There is no price difference between the early access and final release. They cost the same barring any Steam/GoG sale for the game. Aside from the original MOO game and extra human faction the only additional benefit you get for early access is to send comments/bug findings/feature requests to the development team before final release.

I'd expect to see DLC in the form of new ship design packs which I would be totally fine with.

Interestingly, MOO2 just came out on Steam. If it's been made to play nice on modern machines, I'd grab it in a heartbeat!
