Hi Guys

I am currently building a new rig into which I am installing a Maxtor SATA HDD which I understand does not have to be nominated as master/slave. Also this drive will not be using the primary IDE slot....right?

I have 2 optical drives to install 1) NEC 3540 and 2) AOpen 1648/AAP PRO. My query is do I connect these with data cables from primary IDE or secondary IDE and do I set the 2 opticals as slave/master and if so, which?

Thanks for your help.

Frank

FYI The general rule is to always keep your hard disk on a seperate channel then your optical drives. Your HD is sata so now worries for you. Optical drives are slow enough where they can use the same channel and it should effect performance. You can use either channel. I would pick one channel, set one as master and the other as slave, and disable the other channel in the bios.

You dont have to disable the other IDE channel but you will have to wait for your mobo to scan the empty channel for devices when it goes through post if you dont. This can add an additonal 30 secs or so while it waits for the timeout period to expire. Not a lot of time but annoying to me.

I normally disable anything I'm not using anyway...but hey thats just my way of doing things.

All you need to do with the sata hdd is plug it in. & for optimum performance from your optical drives i would set them both to master & use seperate cables for the both i have my LG dvd rom as master to my IDE 1 & my pioneer 109 as master to my IDE 2. then i would go the BIOS and make sure that everything was being picked up coz my bios you have to set up a certain way to have both SATA & IDE running well together
