been watching masterchef, I'm actually pretty amazed at what these so called 'home cooks' can do.

As for hell's kitchen, I watched a season or so. Didn't really liked it, felt really fake. My first time watching ramsay was on hell's kitchen, and I thought he was nothing more than loud and obnoxious. However, upon watching some of his other programs, I realized the personality he puts on for hell's kitchen is mostly an act; I actually respect him a lot now, as he seems to do things for food that most celebrities wouldn't dream of:

A guy that used to wash dishes under me (then moved to prep and whatnot) at a restaurant here in Vancouver just won Top Chef Canada. Never would have imagined he would be that succesful when he was a little runt farting around in the kitchen back in the day. Good for him.

We've eaten Dale MacKay's food when he was the chef at DB Bistro & Lumière, and it was really good. Too bad the restaurant didn't survive.

Now we will have to try his new restaurant Ensemble.

Lumiere was doomed after the whole kerfuffle with Feenie, but yeah, I've walked by Dale's new place a few times and it does look good, I just need to get in there.

I watch them both but prefer Hells Kitchen more, even if half of the people on it suck at cooking usually.

you guys should really watch top chef. there's a bit more gay to it- they're not like fox, trying to convince you that you're not lame for watching singing, dancing, and cooking competitions.

I have watched a few seasons of it and it's decent but the problem with it is unless you are a chef you probably won't understand half of the terms they use in it because the people cooking have so much skill.

Used to watch HK, but found out the prize in hell's kitchen was fake/misrepresented so I stopped watching it. Should look up what each of the winner's ended up doing...

I have gotten bored of hells kitchen every episode seems to be the same

Yea same old formula -> blue team vs. red team compete -> it's a TIE -> commercial break -> Tie breaker!

Or in the finale, usually the one who wins the initial competition (to pick their teammates) in HK loses in the end.

seriously. every fucking competition ends in a tie that can only be resolved after a commercial break

I've also read that the Hell's Kitchen kitchen is deliberately fucked with (eg: ovens not as hot as they should be, burners turning off by themselves, etc)

I hate that show, because every time I see it on my guide I think "Masterchief! Cool, a show about Halo". And then I get disappointed.

No.

And watching those video clips reminds me of why.

you know you could finish that quote and make me look slightly more hetero. ;P

i dunno, i'm not a chef, but i enjoy top chef a lot more than any other cooking show. perhaps there is a bit of a learning aspect- when they talk about carpaccio this and sous vide that, i know exactly what they're talking about...but only because of cooking shows.

That Christine bitch needs to get sent home. She can't cook, and cries almost every single episode. Can't believe she wasn't sent home after the pressure test.

Ramsey tends to be more tame on the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares

he definitely goes off in the US version of Kitchen Nightmares, but a lot of that has to do with dealing with incompetent owners that tend to be full of themselves. that isn't always the case though.

I like watching the F Word on BBC. I think the F Word shows Ramsay's truest personality.

Ramsey is really entertaining.

However I don't understand Hell's Kitchen at all. What's the point? All the chefs are really random. Some work at waffle house, some are already executive chefs, and some don't even really cook at all. It would make more sense if the contestants had at least a somewhat closer range of experience.

The UK kitchen nightmares is pretty good. The US show is all about personal relationships, it's pretty stupid.

You have to wonder how many cooking shows one man can manage. I watch all Ramsay's shows, but then I have a lot of time on my hands.

Masterchef is really highlighting the "home cook" status of the contestants. They keep dropping that term to remind us.

Cooking shows are inherently boring. So I notice the manufactured drama a lot more. They get contestants to take digs at each other. Ramsay constantly harps on a "stunning dish" they have to create, the advantage they can gain for themselves, etc. Sometimes it really falls flat like "It's crucial you cook your best in this challenge because the next contest will end in elimination!!1!1" Whatever! It's obvious the challenge outcome is meaningless and the next one really matters.

As far as Hell Kitchen goes the incessant provocation and goading from Ramsay gets old. He'll call someone a cow, pig, slug or something and then feign shock when they respond in kind "OMG!! You're calling me a ____!!?!? How dare you!" Please ...

And Ramsay's always shifting back and forth on his feet. You can tell he's ex-soccer.

Love Masterchef. Seems most of the cooks are good and the competition is fierce. Challenges are more exciting.

Hell's Kitchen was good the first few seasons but I still watch it. I would bet you that last season had to be a setup with a bunch of actors. I could not believe how incredibly inept those people were and how many of them had major psychological problems. The show has been on for several seasons now. Why on Earth would you go on that show and not know how to make risotto, scallops, or any of the other dishes that they seem to make every season.

I know they think viewers want to see the crazy people compete and get yelled at but enough is enough. I wish they would get real talented motivated people to go on the show. They should go to the top ten cooking schools and find the best recent graduates and have them compete. I think that would be a hell of a lot more interesting to watch.

Have you seen Gordon's new show on BBC America. It is a travel type show where he goes to different countries and trys their food and then will cook something from that country. I have seen two episodes. One where he was in India and another where he was in Vietnam. Both pretty good.

I've always thought that it would be neat if they did like, an all-star show on Hell's Kitchen. Where they took a couple of the best chefs from each season, and had them all compete.

speaking of "all star" have you seen the train wreck of a show they are calling Famous Food. This where seven celebrities are trying to open a restaurant and the winner will become a partner of the restaurant. This has to be the worst celebrity reality show ever. I don't know any of these guys except the guy from the Soprano's. Plus the housewife chick is annoying the hell out of me.

that's going to be tough, since the losers walked away with nothing and the winners usually get screwed out of their prizes
