Matching MotherBoard and Video Card

As a newbie I'm entitled to one simple question, here goes.

I had been thinking LanParty Ultra-D and 6600GT or 6800GT. I think this keeps everything in the nVidia family.

Lately I've been hearing good things about the ATI X800XL. If I went with the X800XL, could I still go with the DFI Ultra-D?

i heard there were some major performance issues on the earlier bios Asus a8n-slis. otherwise i dont believe ATI cards on an NF4 system are an issue. originally it was said that variant branded video cards could work in SLI configuration if set to the same clock speeds, but i believe that is no longer an option (also you cannot mix and match models either 6600gt+6800gt, probably because the driver developers don't want to write complex algorithms that actually work with two different numbers).

Just wondering about an ATI video card on an NVIDIA board.
