While the focus seems to be on 2560x1440, what card would it take to do minimum 60fps /w max detail on 1680x1050? I've estimated a 7970ghz/280x/770/960, maybe a 7950 could pull it off, or would some recent games need a 290x/390x/fury/980ti even at 1680?

If you have monitor that maxes at 1680P, I'd rather invest money to get something more modern.

There's that but I'm still looking to figure out what's the least GPU that is needed to max out this no lag 1680x1050 LCD that I possess. Consider it a retro hardware brain teaser.

A GTX 970 or R9 390 (I'd lean toward the 390/390X for more usable memory) would probably suffice, except for a few newer and/or unoptimized games, like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture or Quantum Break. If you aren't turning down any settings and need 60fps, though, you'd have to get a faster, more expensive card to guarantee that for all or close to all games, even at less than 1080p.

If you have only a handful of games you play, it may be easier to get to the magic 60fps level without spending too much cash... it's just hard to say for sure, especially as the newest games (and upcoming DX12 titles) may or may not give you a perfect, lag-free experience maxed at 1050 on anything less than the 980 Ti or Fury series level.

It's not a teaser at all. It's a question that's impossible to answer because certain games will never maintain 60 FPS minimums even on a 980Ti (Ark Survival Evolved, launch Fallout 4, etc.).

What are the rest of your PC specs including CPU + PSU? Also, what are some of the games you play/want to play in the future? What size monitor is it?

The rig this is for has an overclocked 3570k, 32gb, 750w ps, aka could drive & power a fury/980ti, let alone anything under them.

LCD is 22", which is roughly as tall as a 1080p 24", 11.66 vs 11.77, so mostly just slightly less wide, with no lag and need of 17.5% less GPU power to keep performance up.

Fallout 4 is one, found a performance video for a 280x at 1680x1050, does alright.

I'd say grab a 970/290/390 or somewhere in that ballpark. Your cpu will likely cause you some dips below 60 in certain game titles since it is a limitation. The i5 2500k/3570k are old and tired but still very adequate for mid-range builds. One of the reasons I went a little higher on GPU selection is because that would be the last GPU I'd ever put with 3570. It's a one and done deal.
