1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data
Solve:
(2x^(3)-y)dx+(2x^(2)y+x)dy=0

2. The attempt at a solution
I've tried looking at this equation as a separable, homogeneous, linear, Bernoulli, and exact equation. None of them work.

Please solve.

problem seems to be you are solving a non equation. Atleast that is the result of clicking the link.

Oh sure, this morning you posted that you were leaving. Now, you come crawling back because you discover you need us.

Have you tried looking at the answer to deduce what might work for solving it? (wolframalpha is able to compute this)

(2x^(3)-y)dx+(2x^(2)y+x)dy=0

(2x^(3)-y)dx=-(2x^(2)y+x)dy

There is the first steps...now do the rest.

So you're what? 1 week into the school year and you're already stumped?
Good luck!

Agree, going to office hours will not only help with this problem, but your professor can help you see it more clearly for future tests and quizzes. Also, there's a major benefit to your professor knowing you and thinking you try hard at his course.

I came back to get my CD's and thought while I'm here, I might as well ask. :whiste:

(2x^(3)-y)dx+(2x^(2)y+x)dy=0

(2x^(3)-y)dx=-(2x^(2)y+x)dy

There is the first steps...now do the rest.

Gee thanx.

What are you talking about? I wrote all the text books. psha

go to office hours

Alas ...and another young mind is lost to "see office hours".

no help for quitters.

Quit!!! You jest. The equation listed above is unsolveable. I was hoping that someone would solve it which would complete my life's work. Then I could steal their idea and get a Fields Medal or a Nobel Prize.

You're paying for your professor to be in those office hours. Your professor is there to help with cases like yours. You might as well go.

Bastard! I tossed it in wolframalpha & it solved it. But by hand, I monkeyed around for about 10 minutes before I decided I must be too rusty at diff eqs.

not even close, unless you're a non-resident then it's a remote possibility. Even then, don't try to tell that to your professor, he/she will just laugh at them and give you that "are you stupid?" look.

professors are there to do research and get grants for the school, it's the TAs' job to deal with not too bright students and engineer wanna be's.

At least that what it felt like when I was in college.

Depends on the school. Larger schools are research driven (i.e. mo-money)....smaller schools are actually academically driven and their professors give a damn (at least in my experience).

The best professor that I had in school (teaching wise) was fired for not bringing in the research money. Sad!

Hot TA for the win. You wouldn't believe how many times I've needed help! :sneaky:

Oh, I'm not in any classes. The equation was just for fun.

You are the bastard sir for being so skilled in math that you would attempt it! You smell like a Mathematician! D:

Depends on the professor. I'm at a big research university, but nonetheless most of the professors take a great interest in students.

Professors will give you a higher level answer to guide you in the right direction. A TA might sit down with you and give you more personal help.
