Math in Japanese

For future reference, this could have been avoided by simply walking through a problem.

10/f = 5
f = 2

f * 3 = 12
f = 4

Showing him the answer would have fixed this immediately.

For your reference, of course I showed him this, it didn't fix the problem. Do you think that I said, "okay, solve this for f: 12/f=1," and when he said, "I'm confused," I said, "okay, well, let's move on to something else."

I find it weird that he can't just use f instead of x, after you've explained that f is a variable just like x. The name of the variable is arbitrary.

I'd talk to the kid, ask him to write out some common formula, see if it's so different.

1/f = 12 is pretty universal I don't know how you can not understand that, unless they don't use backslashes in japanese.

Holy crap, if I had to write out equations like that. All my math would be wrong from just transcribing.
