I think there are plenty of smart women that are dumbed down by the societies' expectations of them... With that said, a lot of girls go to school (university) to major in education, which is quite possibly the biggest joke as a major ever.

"communications"

(Asians, however, showed a very slight skew toward females above the 99th percentile, while there were too few Hispanics and blacks scoring above even the 95th percentile to compute their gender ratios.)

HA. Lies.

Was at Pizza Hut one day. Had a bill that was like 27 or so, and we wanted to have it split 4 ways, because none of us had the cash on us to cover it total, unless one wanted to use a credit card. The girl was like "I don't know how to do that... can you? I'm not so good at math". When we walked out we busted up laughing.

Could you honestly divide something like $27.63 by 4 in your head on the fly?

Of course, she should have had a calculator available.

i will see your anecdote:

one day at law school we were doing some math (for some reason or another, don't know why). the questions involved dividing 37,360,000 by 10. one of the male members of the group decided that was too hard for him, and assigned the result a symbol, M.

It's a biological thing; men are more capable to exceed in math/physics/stuff that matters.

What does leaving $7 on a table have to do with dividing $27.63 by 4?

This is sad but no matter how many times I show her, my daughter can't figure 10% of a number.
She couldn't do 10% of 100 without a calculator.

Notice that I didn't ask him to divide $28 by 4 in his head.

This. When it's a waitress you just leave the 37 cents change...

It doesn't seem like it was a place you would tip at.

But if we want nice even numbers:

Divide $273,770 by 4.

Round to nearest whole number (28), divide (7), then deduct difference in change (37), divide by 4 (6.9). You end up with $27.6, a bit off, but it works. Ok, I checked with a calculator...

well... pizza hut you have to pay at the register when at the lunchtime buffet. We all knew it was going to be roughly $7/person, but to get that taken care of so each person could pay on their own. We would have just totaled together that much, but none of us had the exact change to throw together.

But really, with a calculator right at hand (which there was), it's far from difficult to put in the bill, and split it up based on who ordered what (not everyone ordered drinks, so costs would have been different). I don't expect someone to do that much in their head, although it's far from challenging.

But math, for me, is a visual thing and I can visualize what I need to do (when I'm doing math in my head, get out of the way because I'm usually moving my hands either in the air or against a flat surface in ways that let me visualize my calculations).

Easy, 6.85 or something.

(totally in head, really fast, totally close to accurate, enough that you ould round to 6.9 or something)

You don't tip Pizza Hut Waitresses? They get the same crappy waitress pay and do the same waitress job.

When $273,770 is at stake, I would hope to Jeebus that the math would not be done mentally.

uh..yes. I just calculated it to be 6 + 0.75 + 0.15 and 3 cents left over. So everyone pays 6.80 + 1 cent except for 1 person...
