Okay, I know I'm still a junior, but I was just wondering what colleges are good for math/science.
Here is my list of "wishes":
Caltech
MIT
Carnigie Melon
Harvey Mudd
Polytechnic Institute
Any more suggestions?

arod, let me just lend you a little bit of wisdom here from someone attending a tech school. I don't know you, so maybe this does not apply to you. If your idea of a good time is sitting around on a weekend and playing a lan game with the rest of the introverts then great, you'll be rockin no matter where ya go. However do not underestimate the social aspect of the school your looking at. I did, and it is one of the things that I regret until this day. I didn't even think about social things, because I was going to study right? However as far as your personal happiness is concerned this kind of thing is very important. Here at good old RPI there are basically two things to do on the weekends, nothing or get tanked at some lame frat party. None of those really appeal to me so I'm left trying to find something else to do (very hard in the wasteland that is the NY capital district) If you're a hard worker and will get the grades, the name of the school on the top of your diploma will really be a small factor in your eventual success. If I had to go through the process again I'd definitely look into a school that's more heterogenous. How many women are engineers anyway? Not many, and testiment to this fact is that my school only has 25% female population. Don't let yourself become a social misfit like a lot of the folks who attend here. You know after college you do have to go back to the real world. I know that in highschool (at least for me) things like getting into MIT would be killer. But, look past that and examine if you'd be happy at a school beyond just the academics. Having a great school listed on your resume means nothing if it was a horrible experience for you. Basically what I'm saying is get a solid education, and then you will build on that from there. But along with that solid education you'll get some great friends and social experience that will be vitally important for the rest of your life.

Just my $0.02

Notice how Berkeley is also up there...and if you're in-state the tuition is only $4000/yr.
I'm not insinuating anything at all.... no way =D

You just gotta learn to put up with the city.

Go Bears.

Ah damn... Carnegie Mellon ain't even on the list... what gives, now I feel even more down, I'm wasting life away... and my school ain't even gonna get me anywhere in life anymore.

Capn, that was extremely well said. My two friends that were here a year ahead of me, told me not to come. However, I told myself, who cares if there isn't a social life, or if the environment sucked (campus, city). I was gonna study, and the enviroment being as suck as it was would help me in that goal.

Well, let me tell you something, once in a while, you have to step away from studies, and what do you have to wind down (when you have the time, which you won't have much of)... well here in Pittsburgh... NOTHING.

Believe me, I would definitely look more into the social aspects of the schools you are applying too. How I wish I applied to some schools in Boston...

NYU sucks??? Good god, have you seen the true meaning of suck schools? Get this, I was here during the summer for some precollege crap. Two of my friends drove up from Jersey, 8 hour trip because they were mad slow drivers. One attends Seton Hall (no longer) and the other attends Columbia. Anyway, after the 8 hour trip, they found Pittsburgh so boring and depressing that they left the same day! Before the evening hit!

NYU is the bomb! I wouldn't mind going there. The dorm down by South Street Seaport ROCKS!!!

ucla gives you a good mix of academics with a social option. Ranked 12th in that list. I'm not SEAS (school of Engineering and Applied Sciences) but my brother and alot of my friends are, and they have good and bad experiences, but on the job market, a UCLA education will carry weight.

I think UCLA offers a more than just frat parties for social aspects. LA has tons to offer. Definitely best choice I made in regards to college. So much so that I decided to stay almost 6 years :Q

late.

Well, right now it's not a matter of "picking and choosing". If I had my way, I would pick caltech pretty quickly. However, only 500 students are accepted every year and about 200 matriculate (out of 3500 applications). I wouldn't wait a heartbeat to go to either caltech or MIT (however I heard that MIT has the highest suicide rate or something) :-( ). I was just wondering what other options I had for math/science schools since some of these schools are VERY difficult to get it. My "fallback" school is UW, since it is in-state the tuition would be cheap and it is a pretty good school. My only problem with UW is that it is a HUGE school ( I think 14,000+). I don't want to be in lecture halls with 300+ people. I'm almost positive I can get into UW without a hitch. (3.99953 GPA, Full IB Diploma Candidate, active Red Cross volunteer, etc etc. If any of you guys can comment on the campus life of the schools I listed that would be great, especially if you are a student there. Thanks for your input and keep on posting

UC Berkeley is a great school. Close to Silicon Valley and so after college it's pretty easy to get a tech job. Weather is good - not too cold or hot. It's been raining lately, but in a few weeks it'll be warm and sunny. Then that's when all the girls start wearing the halter tops and skimpy clothing. School has equal number of male and female students. However in engineering only 25% are female. Mostly White and Asian so if you're either, you'll feel comfortable on campus.
