Not at $300-$400 a shot!

Why not? People obviously keep buying $300-$400 nvidia cards every 6 months. Probably not the SAME people over and over, but they still sell.

The fact is, you're going to reach a bigger market with 0,6,12,18,24,30,36 month old technology than you will with ONLY 36 month old technology.

"within a month, maybe two" has passed since March 7, without the promised product "announcement".

Which other rumours about this mysterious product will turn out to be untrue or at best exaggerations?

SexyK, it looks to me like NSF4 is the "winner" but i'm sure we can all forgive the schedule flub *if* matrox dishes up a card that lives up to all the other hype:

3. It is fast. It will have a new memory design, different from all current video cards. Memory speed will be faster than the current fastest (a GeForce4). Faster by a huge margin of victory.

4. It is fast. It will be an all new chip. It will not be 256 bit and will not be 128 bit. Expect clock speeds around 300 Mhz. Also expect varied product offerings from this core after the initial products are released.

5. It is 3D feature filled. Expect it to have a fully programmable Transform and Lighting. Displacement mapping is sure to be featured along with shaders. It will have the most powerful Transform and Lighting unit available.

6. It is 2D feature filled. Before you say there is nothing that can be done to improve 2D, let me just say there is. 2D performance and quality will be a leap ahead.

7. It will be expensive. Of course I have no exact dollar amounts, but I am fairly confident in saying Parhelia will be more expensive than current high end cards, but with good cause. It offers much more than anything else on the market.

8. There will be different versions of the card at launch. There will be a lower end model with lower clock speeds and less memory (probably 64MB). There will be a high end model with higher clock speeds and more memory (probably 128MB). Then later there will be a super high end model, (probably 256MB and more features for its target market). The last one is expected to be pricier than the MMS series of cards and will probably be aimed towards the 3D Labs card users.

Did you check the link? It will be divulged on May 14, 2002. The card will be available 1-2 months after.

So, it's a little later than I hoped... Not too bad, though.

I read the entire thread, but still can't figure out the real specs. What this card will be like? Now I know it's not vaporware. But what is it going to be? Maybe it's just another enhancement, like the G550 over the G450. Maybe there's nothing of a really big change with that card.

Well....I guess ill be passing on the GF4 Ti4200 and holding off until this. I can't stand the 2D quality of nvidia. I'm running a GF2 mx400 and its unbearable.

Yeah. 2D has improved much for NVIDIA.

As for Matrox, it will hopefully be a DX9 complaint card which would mean it would probably come out close to the release of DX9. Or else, they won't have any software to demo their new video card and its new features, unless they have cool OGL demos.

Well at least we know it officially exists. I just got my owners email from Matrox ... I guess we will have to wait till the 14th to see what the cookie holds inside.

well, when mr. shimpi went to SF on his mysterioso trip, he said what he saw "is one of the reasons why
I love being in the computer field" - or something to that effect. If he's talking about the Matrox, then its
a killer.

the MURC speculation definately intimated at 3-6 weeks, but hey, pre-production schedules are MEANT to be pushed back so 9 weeks is worth waiting for a superior product.

That's considering it is a superior product, 9 weeks is an awful long time in the computer industry these day's

I run a Matrox G450 dual monitors because I really appreciate the high quality 2D. I bought a Ti4400 also and still think that I can tell the difference between the two in 2D. Of course, 3D is no contest. So, a Matrox entrant into the 3D world would allow me to replace my G450 in 3 months, get ? great drivers for both 2D and 3D performance. Sounds very good to me; May 14th.
