Everyone remembers back in the days of the G200 and stuff, i still have one. Well after that Matrox sorta just got massacred time and again by ATI and Nvidia. And their Parehlia though good on paper IIRC stunk. Anyways, What are they doing now? I know they still are very good at worstation and 2d quality and stuff but any 3d cards in the drawing boards or anything?

Generally im asking... tell everything ya can .

matrox is just gonna make derivatives of the parhelia for the next few years, just like the gx00 series

dont expect great 3d performance from them, but as always with matrox, you can expect the best 2D IQ and Multiple monitor cards in the industry.

Well dont they have any chips that can coming out that can compete with ATI and NVdiai. Also what is there big problem... i know they have incredible IQ but what is holding them back from competeing with the big 2.

Perhaps they don't want to? Like, could they prefer to be exploiting a market niche with lots of cash in it (business solutions), rather than going for a fish slapping match in an entirely price driven market (home users)?

And it's possible that they simply don't have the resources to try to compete with ATi and nVidia. It'd take a lot of R&D to be able to catch up, and then some to stay competitive. They do what they're good at right now. If anyone else tries to invade their arena, then maybe they'll start pushing back harder.

I would be willing to bet that they do.

Dont they have better IQ all around that ATI and Nvidia and ATI do?

Also wasn't the Parehlia supposed to compete with ATI and Nvidai and it looked good on paper but it failed for some reason?

What was Matrox's last attempt in the gaming market. I heard that the G200 was probably their most succesful chip... right?

I think Peter pretty much nailed it. Matrox is most likely content with their business product market share. I dont think they want to be pulling their hair out like NV and ATI always scrambling to have the fastest card out there.

I myself have 2 Matrox G450's Dual Head. They are the best quality cards I have ever owned and I will never get rid of them. They are a pleasure to look at for 2D and very easy on the eyes.

Why would Matrox compete with ATI & Nvidia in the gamers market?!!

Matrox always catered to the business community and with the X10/X100 video editing cards plus other products for the ?professional? market
Why would they shoot them selves in a foot and be drugged in to a pissing contest between ATI & Nvidia when it?s a forgone conclusion they?d lose badly.

I never said they would but didn't they at one time attempt it. I remember my dad bought a G200 and i thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread. We still have it AND it allows for memory expansion

Although I admittedly don't view anything at over 1600 X 1200, I personally don't feel there is anything beyond "splitting hairs" differences in image quality between Matrox and ATI/Nvidia from the last year or so. Really, putting out crystal-clear image quality at any "normal" resolution is several orders of magnitude below the difficulties of the issues that ATI/Nvidia engineers deal with.

Perhaps at 2000 X 1500 it is a different story. This reminds me of the audiophile-voodoo belief in $1000 interconnect cables -- it really is simple science as to what works and what doesn't. Perhaps this is a reputation that comes from some cheapo distributors of ATI/Nvidia (e.g., PNY) having poor quality control, whereas Matrox distributes their own.

Cos at that time what was competing against it was a 8Mb Diamond S3 etc?
Or god forbid a Syruxlogic 0.5-2MB cards
and 3D was largely handled by a 2nd card
btw Matrox had 3D accelerator card , can?t remember the model now

So if the 3D performance was largely the same across the board
Matrox 2D put every one else to shame

if memory serves correct the G400 Max was the fastest 3d card at one stage (for a few weeks at least)
